Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals – Box Score – June 02, 2012 – ESPN.
Pitcher wins, pitcher losses. Brandon Beachy gets a loss after going six and a third innings and allowing two runs — one of them inherited — on three hits. He did walk four, the last of which came around to score.
It didn’t seem likely that the Braves would ever score against Stephen Strasburg, who allowed just four hits in seven innings. Jose Constanza doubled in the third but couldn’t score on Michael Bourn‘s single, and after that they didn’t do much.
In the fifth, Beachy allowed a leadoff homer by Jesus Flores to make it 1-0. After getting the first man in the seventh, he walked the second, and Fredi went to Chad Durbin, of course, who walked the only man he faced. Jonny Venters threw a wild pitch that hit Brian McCann, who had to leave the game, then gave up a hit to make it 2-0. The Braves had a couple of two-out hits against a reliever in the eighth but failed to score, and went 1-2-3 in the ninth.
I missed it. Any early reviews on Simmons’ defense?
#1: Never was challenged by any difficult plays, but he made all the small ones look easy.

Just saw on ESPN that in his last 4 starts, RA Dickey has 38Ks and only 2BBs. Surprised and amazed me- I would not have thought a knuckleballer could get into that sort of zone.
Yeah, he’s slick. Why I wanted him to get the job to begin with, but I really don’t have a major problem with how the FO handled it. Give the heir apparent the chance. If he fails, on to the next in line. I anticipate that The Rev will have a nice career at 2nd for someone else.
Yes, Pastornicky had more experience and they knew Simmons had more potential, so they gave Pastornicky his shot and let Simmons get some more experience. No problem with how they handled it, and they called Simmons up just at the breaking point.

Fun stats from AAA today:
Medlin: 2.1 IP 4 runs, 5 hits, 4 Ks 2 BB
All of the outs he recorded were Ks or groundouts. So if the ball was hit on the ground, that is probably why he gave up five hits. They were probably all within three feet of the shortstop.

Went to the Reds-Astros game in Houston last night, and my only wish regarding the game came true: I got to see Aroldis Chapman pitch. He struck out the side. He threw all fastballs, all between 98 and 101, except for one nasty slider at 89. That kid is something else.
The Braves couldn’t beat the Nationals when they were contending for a playoff spot and the Nationals were terrible.
Now that the Nationals are actually good, it has gotten really embarrassing.
4-11 against the East…playoffs won’t be a worry unless we can figure out how to compete against the better pitchers.

I think I’ve given up hope for this season.
Starting next year, Bryce Harper is going to be the best player in the division. Should be fun seeing him 18 times a year for the next decade, he’s already dominating us.
Back to the losing streak formula, huh? Get yourself in a nice big hole early on, take the suspense out of it.
If I had my way, we’d have one hell of a AAA rotation. More in terms of talent and age, though. I suspect the performance would be average at best.

Both. Two Nationals hit first inning home runs, but only one did Simpson and Caray obsess over and reshow a half-dozen times.
Harper’s start has been less impressive than Francoeur’s in 2005. Let’s hold off on that Harper Hall of Fame plaque that ESPN clearly thinks should be produced now, shall we?
Francoeur was 21, Harper is 19, that’s a monumental difference right there. Do yourself a favor and look at the list of people who have even have 100 MLB PA’s at age 19 and perhaps you’ll be a little more impressed.

Nah, I’m not one of those people that think a 21 year old and a 23 year old doing the same thing automatically means the 21 year old is having a better season.
I’d gladly add Harper to the Braves.

Tommy seems to have settled into a pretty nice groove. It would be nice if the Braves were to score a few runs for him.
Harper is working out the final details with Liberty Media for a minority ownership role in the Braves.
@33: Exactly. Can you imagine having an OF consisting of Harper, Bourn, and Heyward? Instead, we end up with Diaz or Constanza. The Braves will never be able to afford Harper if he produces as expected.

Look — it is hard to do ANYTHING at the age of 19. Being good at baseball at the age of 19 doesn’t guarantee that you’re going to make the Hall of Fame, but it guarantees that, unless you suffer a career-ending injury, you’re going to be on the ballot.
Just based on the fact that he is doing this as a 19-year old, Bryce Harper is one of the greatest baseball players you will ever see in your life. You will tell your grandchildren about him.
I am not saying this to be hyperbolic. Here’s the list of all 19-year olds with 100 PA and an OPS over .800:

It’s not 2011 any longer. O’Flaherty has given up the same number of earned runs (8) already this year as he did in all of last year.

This year, O’Flaherty could give up twice or three times as many runs as he gave up all of last year and still be a good relief pitcher. Very far, in fact, from a failure.
