Nats 2, Braves 0

Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals – Box Score – June 02, 2012 – ESPN.

Pitcher wins, pitcher losses. Brandon Beachy gets a loss after going six and a third innings and allowing two runs — one of them inherited — on three hits. He did walk four, the last of which came around to score.

It didn’t seem likely that the Braves would ever score against Stephen Strasburg, who allowed just four hits in seven innings. Jose Constanza doubled in the third but couldn’t score on Michael Bourn‘s single, and after that they didn’t do much.

In the fifth, Beachy allowed a leadoff homer by Jesus Flores to make it 1-0. After getting the first man in the seventh, he walked the second, and Fredi went to Chad Durbin, of course, who walked the only man he faced. Jonny Venters threw a wild pitch that hit Brian McCann, who had to leave the game, then gave up a hit to make it 2-0. The Braves had a couple of two-out hits against a reliever in the eighth but failed to score, and went 1-2-3 in the ninth.

I missed it. Any early reviews on Simmons’ defense?

#1: Never was challenged by any difficult plays, but he made all the small ones look easy.

    Smooth.

    Scump Says:

Just saw on ESPN that in his last 4 starts, RA Dickey has 38Ks and only 2BBs. Surprised and amazed me- I would not have thought a knuckleballer could get into that sort of zone.

    urlhix Says:

Yeah, he’s slick. Why I wanted him to get the job to begin with, but I really don’t have a major problem with how the FO handled it. Give the heir apparent the chance. If he fails, on to the next in line. I anticipate that The Rev will have a nice career at 2nd for someone else.

  6. 6
    Bethany Says:

Yes, Pastornicky had more experience and they knew Simmons had more potential, so they gave Pastornicky his shot and let Simmons get some more experience. No problem with how they handled it, and they called Simmons up just at the breaking point.

Just bizness. It sucks, but it happens every weekday, oh, and on weekends.

    Looks like Harper got….Constanza’d.

    YEAAAAAAAAH!!!

Also on the downside for The Rev, his loses his MLB minimum salary and reverts back to MiLB pay.

    Smitty Says:

    Fun stats from AAA today:

    Medlin: 2.1 IP 4 runs, 5 hits, 4 Ks 2 BB

All of the outs he recorded were Ks or groundouts. So if the ball was hit on the ground, that is probably why he gave up five hits. They were probably all within three feet of the shortstop.

    Pastornicky- 1-4 and an error.

  11. 11
    Adam R Says:

I’m ready to forget about Pastornicky until he makes me remember him.

    Big D Says:

Went to the Reds-Astros game in Houston last night, and my only wish regarding the game came true: I got to see Aroldis Chapman pitch. He struck out the side. He threw all fastballs, all between 98 and 101, except for one nasty slider at 89. That kid is something else.

  13. 13
    Dan Says:

The Braves couldn’t beat the Nationals when they were contending for a playoff spot and the Nationals were terrible.

Now that the Nationals are actually good, it has gotten really embarrassing.

  14. 14
    krussell Says:

4-11 against the East…playoffs won’t be a worry unless we can figure out how to compete against the better pitchers.

No one said Jurrjens was starting today.

I think I’ve given up hope for this season.

  18. 18
    jj3bagger Says:

Starting next year, Bryce Harper is going to be the best player in the division. Should be fun seeing him 18 times a year for the next decade, he’s already dominating us.

  19. 19
    Anon21 Says:

Back to the losing streak formula, huh? Get yourself in a nice big hole early on, take the suspense out of it.

  20. 20
    drewdat Says:

If I had my way, we’d have one hell of a AAA rotation. More in terms of talent and age, though. I suspect the performance would be average at best.

    Dan Says:

Sick of the fawning over Harper.

  22. 22
    Our New Insect Overlords Says:

This is starting to look like ’93 … Except the Braves are playing the role of the expansion Rockies.

  23. 23
    oldtimer? Says:

    Congrats kid, first XBH.

  24. 24
    jj3bagger Says:

21, he’s having one of the five best age 19 seasons in the history of baseball so far, the fawning is warranted, as much as that pains me to say.

  25. 25
    jj3bagger Says:

I’m not listening to the game, so I don’t know if you’re referring to Joe & Chip’s fawning or just the fawning in general, but Harper’s been pretty damn impressive so far.

  26. 26
    Coop Says:

    Jeez.

  27. 27
    Bethany Says:

Tommy’s WHIP this season is over 1.4. And he’s been one of our better pitchers.

  28. 28
    Coop Says:

I think I’ll start making a pitcher of margaritas when Hanson pitches. It might reduce the tension.

  29. 29
    Dan Says:

I’m not listening to the game, so I don’t know if you’re referring to Joe & Chip’s fawning or just the fawning in general, but Harper’s been pretty damn impressive so far.

Both. Two Nationals hit first inning home runs, but only one did Simpson and Caray obsess over and reshow a half-dozen times.

Harper’s start has been less impressive than Francoeur’s in 2005. Let’s hold off on that Harper Hall of Fame plaque that ESPN clearly thinks should be produced now, shall we?

  30. 30
    jj3bagger Says:

Francoeur was 21, Harper is 19, that’s a monumental difference right there. Do yourself a favor and look at the list of people who have even have 100 MLB PA’s at age 19 and perhaps you’ll be a little more impressed.

  31. 31
    Dan Says:

    …perhaps you’ll be a little more impressed.

Nah, I’m not one of those people that think a 21 year old and a 23 year old doing the same thing automatically means the 21 year old is having a better season.

  32. 32
    Coop Says:

I’d gladly add Harper to the Braves.

  33. 33
    krussell Says:

Indeed, even though he appears to be a supreme douche, I’d take Harper over anyone on our current roster.

  34. 34
    Coop Says:

Tommy seems to have settled into a pretty nice groove. It would be nice if the Braves were to score a few runs for him.

  35. 35
    Smitty Says:

Harper is working out the final details with Liberty Media for a minority ownership role in the Braves.

  36. 36
    DG Says:

@33: Exactly. Can you imagine having an OF consisting of Harper, Bourn, and Heyward? Instead, we end up with Diaz or Constanza. The Braves will never be able to afford Harper if he produces as expected.

  37. 37
    Bethany Says:

    Jason!!!!

  38. 38
    Coop Says:

    Nice, Jason.

  39. 39
    Coop Says:

    Now shut them down, Tommy.

  40. 40
    Dan Says:

    BryceFail, day two.

  41. 41
    Coop Says:

I’ll take all the luck we can get.

  42. 42
    Bethany Says:

    Simmons!

  43. 43
    Coop Says:

    Simmons has a nice arm.

  44. 44
    joelk Says:

    Prado is a good player!

  45. 45
    Coop Says:

    Whew.

  46. 46
    krussell Says:

Looks like we got a break there.

  47. 47
    joelk Says:

    Hanson being pretty efficient today.

  48. 48
Alex Remington (Another Alex R.) Says:

    Nice.

Look — it is hard to do ANYTHING at the age of 19. Being good at baseball at the age of 19 doesn’t guarantee that you’re going to make the Hall of Fame, but it guarantees that, unless you suffer a career-ending injury, you’re going to be on the ballot.

Just based on the fact that he is doing this as a 19-year old, Bryce Harper is one of the greatest baseball players you will ever see in your life. You will tell your grandchildren about him.

I am not saying this to be hyperbolic. Here’s the list of all 19-year olds with 100 PA and an OPS over .800:

    Jimmie Foxx
    Mel Ott
    Tony Conigliaro
    Bryce Harper

    That’s the list.

  49. 49
    Coop Says:

Get the pen ready, Freddie. Let’s don’t let this game get away.

  50. 50
Alex Remington (Another Alex R.) Says:

Huckleberry, doing what we know he does.

  51. 51
    Bethany Says:

    I love Simmons already.

  52. 52
    Coop Says:

I am enjoying having a competent shortstop. Now let’s get some runs.

  53. 53
Alex Remington (Another Alex R.) Says:

He’s one slick dude, isn’t he?

  54. 54
    Coop Says:

    Desmond looks good too.

  55. 55
    Smitty Says:

Is it too late for Simmons to win a Gold Glove? Maybe I am just use to watching the Bradenton Butcher.

  56. 56
    Coop Says:

    Better lucky than good, Tommy.

  57. 57
    Smitty Says:

    Good game Tommy

  58. 58
    Coop Says:

    Runs, please.

  59. 59
Alex Remington (Another Alex R.) Says:

So Tommy’s final line was: 7 innings, 6 hits, 6 strikeouts, no walks. That looks like a good performance, even though it was completely nervewracking like all of his performances are.

Oh, hey! It’s the erstwhile Automatic Lefty!

  60. 60
    Coop Says:

    I may be ill.

  61. 61
    Bethany Says:

Everything that used to be good is awful now.

  62. 62
    Our New Insect Overlords Says:

Meanwhile, Kimbrel’s arm will get another day off.

  63. 63
    Smitty Says:

This would be a good day for Kimbrel to go more than one

  64. 64
    DG Says:

O’Failurety trying to give the game away, but the DP helps greatly.

  65. 65
    Bethany Says:

    Whew.

  66. 66
    Coop Says:

    Thank you.

  67. 67
    Smitty Says:

Bradenton Butcher doens’t make that play

  68. 68
    joelk Says:

    Nice work Eric!

  69. 69
    DG Says:

I love how Constanza turned like he was going to throw the ball into the stands after making the catch, but then decided that the Nats fans didn’t deserve it, ha ha.

  70. 70
    Smitty Says:

I like Contstanza. He shouldn’t play over Heyward, but he is a nice role player

  71. 71
    David O Says:

@64: O’Failurety? Could you possibly be a more fickle fan?

  72. 72
    Coop Says:

    Kimbrel time at last.

  73. 73
    Smitty Says:

I bet Kimbrel has some rust and puts at least one on.

  74. 74
    DG Says:

@71: Dude, I got that nickname from folks on this page. I didn’t come up with it.

  75. 75
    Dan Says:

Kimbrel is one of the few players inspiring confidence.

  76. 76
    se1915 Says:

After last year, anyone who has stuck with using the “O’Failurety” tag must be a massive tool. We’re not calling non-scored errors “Prados” anymore.

  77. 77
    David O Says:

@74: I didn’t imply you were being creative.

  78. 78
    Smitty Says:

    I was wrong. Nice win.

  79. 79
    Coop Says:

    Not much rust though.

  80. 80
    David O Says:

    Dominant.

  81. 81
    Coop Says:

We actually beat the Nationals. One in a row.

  82. 82
    Dan Says:

After last year, anyone who has stuck with using the “O’Failurety” tag must be a massive tool.

It’s not 2011 any longer. O’Flaherty has given up the same number of earned runs (8) already this year as he did in all of last year.

  83. 83
    Mac Thomason Says:

    Recapped.

  84. 84
    Smitty Says:

Kimbrel just got his 200th strikeout for his career. He has pitched 117.2 innings. Stupid

  85. 85
    se1915 Says:

“It’s not 2011 any longer. O’Flaherty has given up the same number of earned runs (8) already this year as he did in all of last year.”

This year, O’Flaherty could give up twice or three times as many runs as he gave up all of last year and still be a good relief pitcher. Very far, in fact, from a failure.
