Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Atlanta Braves – Box Score – September 04, 2011 – ESPN.
That’s the game the Braves win? Down 3-0 with Clayton Kershaw on the mound, the Braves scratched out three runs in the seventh to tie, then another one in the ninth to win it. Pretty good bullpen work, this time.
Randall Delgado was pretty good… except in the third. He allowed a hit to Kershaw, then an infield single, then he gave up a two-out homer to Matt Kemp to make it 3-0. He only allowed one other hit in five innings, but with Kershaw on the mound you have to figure that the Braves are in trouble.
They really couldn’t do anything… until the seventh. With one out, Alex Gonzalez and Jack Wilson (playing third, don’t ask) singled. Jose Constanza hit the ball down the third base line, pretty hard, and the third baseman, trying to start the double play, threw way off line, everyone safe and the score 3-1. After a wild pitch, Brooks Conrad hit a flare single to tie it.
The Braves couldn’t get a run after a leadoff single in the eighth. In the ninth, Constanza singled with one out, then went to second on a wild pitch. Chipper Jones, pinch-hitting at the time, was walked intentionally. Michael Bourn hit a line drive to the gap that held up long enough for Andre Ethier to get it. And then, with two out, Martin Prado worked and worked and finally delivered, a single down the left field line to score Constanza.
As I mentioned, the Braves got some good work from the bullpen. Cristhian Martinez pitched the sixth and seventh, getting into a bit of a jam in the latter but getting out of it. Eric O’Flaherty had some troubles of his own, in part because of a catcher’s interference on David Ross, but got a double play to get out of it. Craig Kimbrel, who got the win, had no trouble at all in the ninth.
JC’ed….
Listening to the end of the game on the radio was great. Made me feel like I was 10 years old again.
//oh and re: the earlier discussion, I remember quite clearly when I had suffered the worst heartbreak of my natural life I gave my rooommate my Ray Charles CDs and told him not to let me have them for a year.
“Drown In My Own Tears” is just the greatest most misery inducing record of all times.
I heartily encourage everyone here to listen to this, with one exception.
Oh I forgot about this one, which is way worse.
Great game! Fear teh Prado! Quite a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon, I must say. 🙂
Phillies go to the 13th, Cardinals to the 10th.
Hey ububba – I just left the Drive-Invasion after speaking with Dex and Roky Erickson. I’ll leave the content to your imagination.
I hope the Phillies and PURE EVIL go 30 innings.
PURE EVIL first and third with no one out and Snitkered into a no run inning. And we go to 14. Reds with a lead but Pujols at the plate — roughly a wash.
And… the Reds win. Magic number down 2 today.
Magic number is 15 now
Great, great win today. My apologies to everyone involved. I never thought that this was possible.
Three games with the Phils are coming up. Phillies pitchers will be Lee (vs. Lowe), Worley (vs. Huddy) and Oswalt (vs. Beachy). Those are about the best possible matchups for us that I can think of.
Now what was the Chip hate about there at the end?
Walkoff walk. Marlins win.
John R – He wet his pants on Bourn’s gapper that Ethier caught.
Sure glad we didn’t play that useless Constanza. Oh, wait …

Profane Russian ska music? I bow before your musical reach, sir.

Lowe / Hudson / Beachy, ay? I guess it’s just possible that will be our Playoff order.
9, he raised his voice to unprecedented heights when Bourn flied out to center, so everyone thought the game was over. He has done that a million times I guess.
11—Pretty sure he wet Joe’s pants, too.
That’s our 82nd win, which puts us over the top for a .500 season.
Hey, if you want to see a picture of Cody Ross as Douchey McDouchebag, check out him pointing to the sky after his home run trot at MLB.com. It’s the feature image.
Next year, Cody. Whammo. Right in the ribcage.
D’backs now up 4-1 on the Giants. Definitely a big win today.
We’ve got 23 games left, the Cards have 22. If we go 11-12, the Cardinals have to go 19-3 to force a one game playoff.
If the Phillies go 12-13 in their remaining 25, we have to finish 18-5 to tie.
I’m gonna predict tomorrow’s starting lineup will still have Prado at first and Diaz in left.
@18
I know where they could get six of those loses (one can dream)
@1
Me too Spike!
Spike,
I hear you, bro, but can’t yet process. I’ve been wide-open since it was 28-7.
Rob,
Drinks are overdue. Hang in there. Life gets better; it always does.
Don’t forget this breakup gem from the J. Geils Band. It might just be the greatest video ever, in retrospect.
how do y’all always talk about “good music” but never mention eminem?
Amazing what a comeback win does for morale around here. I thought I was reading the Royals’ blog for a minute there.
21, Thanks, man. I’m excited to see the new Miami stadium next year so let me know when you’re in Florida. I look forward to feeling slightly chilly at a Marlins game.
To John from the last thread: thanks so much for posting the link to the SABR bio for Wenty Ford. The SABR Bio Project is simply one of the best things on the internet; those pieces are magnificent.
I now want to go to Nassau just to visit the shrine to one of the most obscure Braves players ever!
Runs scored this series when I was watching: Dodgers 11, Braves 2.
Runs scored while I wasn’t watching: Braves 9, Dodgers 2.
My apologies for watching so much this weekend.
My best friend’s Korean wife is making me kimchi for the first time and it literally smells like old garbage. Is it socially unacceptable to throw up at the dinner table?
My eyes are watering.
Edit: As it cooked, it went from smelling awful to amazing. Pretty crazy.
@29, My old roommate kept it in the freezer and it still stunk up the whole apartment. Pungent stuff.
I am thinking of adding “Wins” and “Losses” categories so that in the future you could go back and just read about the happy games. But then I’ve got more than a thousand recaps by now and I certainly don’t want to have to go back and relabel all of them. So screw that.
Mac, I wish you 3000 recaps more…cheers & Roll Tide
Mac, I bet you could find someone to do it… interested in opening it up to the floor?
It’s a big task, but if anyone wants to volunteer…
Oh, and McLouth was moved to the 60-day DL to make room for Antoan Richardson. In other words, the McLouth Era is over. I know everyone’s heartbroken.
Rob, Best Wishes, hang in there. In the mean time, a little Hank Williams always helps.

You could always just start it tomorrow and not relabel any previous games. Or do the 2011 games only. It’ll add up eventually.
Rob,
Very sorry man. Hang in there.
Guys, ignore Emma. He obviously wants attention. Respnding just feeds the troll. He is a child.
Mac-
I’m more than happy to help with labeling the recaps, but I know absolutely nothing about HTML or anything whatsoever pertinent to running a website. If that’s not a handicap then I volunteer!
yeah you could pool volunteers, and each person could take a season and do it over time. I’d be in for that.
If we win the world series, will guys like Nate McLouth get a ring?
No because we aren’t going to make the playoffs.
At 42 lol!!! You took the words out of my mouth.
@42 Of course, we are DOOMED!!!!!
Rob,
Randy is right. Embrace the blues. Remember the best cure for a woman is a woman.
@42
Point on.
Has anyone seen MLB Network’s Top 75 catches of all time? I know it’s probably necessary to put a mix of the old and new but some of those old catches (like Brooks Robinson’s diving catch at 3rd) happen nightly now.
I forget who linked to it first, but can some relink me to those YouTube commercials of Bob Horner in Japan? I made the mistake of not bookmarking them and now I can’t find them in any search.
@46 Unfortunately I don’t have MLB Network, but I can say that every time I’ve seen a “best catches ever” list, the Willie Mays running catch from the ’54 WS is near the top. While that was an excellent catch, the difficulty level there was nothing special compared to many catches made in the outfield these days. Of course, “The Catch” is part of baseball lore, and was made at a critical juncture in a World Series game, so it gets extra credit based upon context. That’s fine, I guess, but the fact remains that running over the shoulder catches happen in baseball all the time.
@48
I always thought the throw after the catch was the better play.
@47 – ‘Bob Horner mollests japanese children’ didn’t work?
@48 – Yeah, I’ve seen that catch many times, and it doesn’t look like the most amazing thing of all time. I think what the film doesn’t capture is the idea that the way the Polo Grounds was configured, today that ball would have been 20 rows deep in the CF bleachers.
50: Unfortunately no!
I believe this is the greatest catch of all time.
Smitty Says:
Rob,
Randy is right. Embrace the blues. Remember the best cure for a woman is a woman.
Amen.
And as far as broke heart music, Richard Buckner, “Bloomed”.
It should have a warning sticker on it.
@48: Yeah, I felt the same way about “The Catch” until I saw a display about it at the HoF in Cooperstown. Basically, the camera does a terrible job capturing the play. Based on his shallow positioning and how hard the ball was hit, there was no way Mays could catch that ball. It’s the run before and the throw after that make the play, not the actual catching of the ball.
Remember the best cure for a woman is a woman.
That is some seriously-horrible advice.
29–happily it is a taste that can be acquired: just don’t think too hard about it…..
54: Bloomed is great (all Buckner albums are at least great), but an appetizer for what was to come in Devotion + Doubt. One record that should definitely come with a warning label is Iris Dement’s My Life. Whew! That one is lethal.
That is some seriously-horrible advice.
Yep. The best cure for a woman is to figure out what your sorry ass did wrong the last time.
It will be interesting to see the lineups in the Philly series, because the last couple of weeks Fredi has clearly gone into rest and recovery mode for his starters. I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see Freeman rest his quad again, and Chipper can always stand a day off every few games.
@59, Yep. Avoid girls who want to go to law school. Sage advice.
Yep. The best cure for a woman is
to figure out what your sorry ass did wrong the last timea whore.Fixed that for you, Sam.
My guess at tonight’s lineup:
1. Bourn 2. Prado 3. McCann 4. Uggla 5. Chipper 6. Freeman 7. Diaz 8. Gonzalez
No, Rob. You’re confusing categories.
Has anyone noticed Andruw is chubby again?
My WAG at the lineup
Bourn
Prado
Chipper
Uggla
Diaz
Freeman
Ross
AAG
Edit: And somehow, some way, Diaz will go 1-4 with three strikeouts despite seeing only 8 pitches.
What I think Fredi’s gonna do:
1. Bourn, CF
2. Prado, 1B
3. Chipper, 3B
4. Uggla, 2B
5. McCann, C
6. Diaz, LF
7. A-Gon, SS
8. Pressure On the Defense, RF
9. Lowe, P
Honestly, that’s a pretty good lineup against the lefty Lee, especially if Freddie’s quad is still yapping at him. If Fredi was feeling really adventurous, he could put the better hitter Lowe in at the 8 slot and move A-Gon down to 9, but apparently his experiment with that is over and done with.
(He may flip Chipper and McCann, but with Brian struggling, I wouldn’t.)
Ok, so I’m watching Sucker Punch, and…What the hell? Anyone help me out on how to understand this atrocity?
According to DOB, Tyler Pastornicky has been reactivated from the DL in Gwinnett; also, 90% chance of rain for Philadelphia both today and tomorrow.
I never saw Sucker Punch, but from what I read it’s just a horrific train wreck of a movie. Apparently the moral of the story is “sometimes you have to be raped and lobotomized, but it’s okay if you create a mental delusion to avoid that reality.” Or something.
I read a review about “Sucker Punch” basically wondering how a movie with dragons and gatling gun wielding samurai robots could be so boring.
This would be the best movie on the planet if slow motion walking made a movie.
I saw Sucker Punch. I don’t know if there was supposed to be a point, but if so, it certainly got lost. As you mentioned, that movie is just a godawful mess. At least you didn’t waste 12 bucks to see it in a theater. For that, I commend you. I wish I could say the same for myself.
this is a baseball blog
Lord. Iris Dement. That’s not something that is good for you.
