Braves 4, Dodgers 3
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Atlanta Braves – Box Score – September 04, 2011 – ESPN.
That’s the game the Braves win? Down 3-0 with Clayton Kershaw on the mound, the Braves scratched out three runs in the seventh to tie, then another one in the ninth to win it. Pretty good bullpen work, this time.
Randall Delgado was pretty good… except in the third. He allowed a hit to Kershaw, then an infield single, then he gave up a two-out homer to Matt Kemp to make it 3-0. He only allowed one other hit in five innings, but with Kershaw on the mound you have to figure that the Braves are in trouble.
They really couldn’t do anything… until the seventh. With one out, Alex Gonzalez and Jack Wilson (playing third, don’t ask) singled. Jose Constanza hit the ball down the third base line, pretty hard, and the third baseman, trying to start the double play, threw way off line, everyone safe and the score 3-1. After a wild pitch, Brooks Conrad hit a flare single to tie it.
The Braves couldn’t get a run after a leadoff single in the eighth. In the ninth, Constanza singled with one out, then went to second on a wild pitch. Chipper Jones, pinch-hitting at the time, was walked intentionally. Michael Bourn hit a line drive to the gap that held up long enough for Andre Ethier to get it. And then, with two out, Martin Prado worked and worked and finally delivered, a single down the left field line to score Constanza.
As I mentioned, the Braves got some good work from the bullpen. Cristhian Martinez pitched the sixth and seventh, getting into a bit of a jam in the latter but getting out of it. Eric O’Flaherty had some troubles of his own, in part because of a catcher’s interference on David Ross, but got a double play to get out of it. Craig Kimbrel, who got the win, had no trouble at all in the ninth.

Listening to the end of the game on the radio was great. Made me feel like I was 10 years old again.
//oh and re: the earlier discussion, I remember quite clearly when I had suffered the worst heartbreak of my natural life I gave my rooommate my Ray Charles CDs and told him not to let me have them for a year.
“Drown In My Own Tears” is just the greatest most misery inducing record of all times.

September 5th, 2011 at 8:34 am@46 Unfortunately I don’t have MLB Network, but I can say that every time I’ve seen a “best catches ever” list, the Willie Mays running catch from the ’54 WS is near the top. While that was an excellent catch, the difficulty level there was nothing special compared to many catches made in the outfield these days. Of course, “The Catch” is part of baseball lore, and was made at a critical juncture in a World Series game, so it gets extra credit based upon context. That’s fine, I guess, but the fact remains that running over the shoulder catches happen in baseball all the time.

@48: Yeah, I felt the same way about “The Catch” until I saw a display about it at the HoF in Cooperstown. Basically, the camera does a terrible job capturing the play. Based on his shallow positioning and how hard the ball was hit, there was no way Mays could catch that ball. It’s the run before and the throw after that make the play, not the actual catching of the ball.
