Reporting in game thread: June 20, Blue Jays at Braves
Hi, so I’m out of the hospital and in pretty good shape, all things considered. I indeed had a staph infection like Martin Prado’s, in this case MRSA, or “Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus“. That is, a strain resistent to some of the most common antibiotics. I actually was prescribed the correct drug, but (tender imaginations might stop reading here) I developed a large abcess — I compared it to a potato — that served as a reservoir for the bacteria so the antibiotics didn’t reach it all. The surgeon went in and drained the abcess and now the antibotics are working.
I may recap tonight, I may recap tomorrow morning. Depends. Still using a borrowed computer.

Welcome back, Mac! And Go Braves.
@Tom from the last thread: I actually did see a far number of Braves caps in the last years thanks to Usher and some other musicians wearing them, I think. When I asked one of my friends, who wore one, what the “A” stands for…he answered “Astros”. Ouch!
June 20th, 2011 at 1:33 pmGood deal Mac. Yeah, staph infections can be awful. Hope you continue to get better.
June 20th, 2011 at 1:40 pmWelcome back… and no baked potatoes for dinner tonight.
June 20th, 2011 at 1:45 pm“I compared it to a potato”
…good God.
Good to have you back though!
June 20th, 2011 at 1:46 pmMac–I am glad that you are back and feeling better. Your account is actually quite scary–what an ordeal….
June 20th, 2011 at 1:48 pmOur first GCL game has been completed (for those who follow such things)–a loss to the Yanks:
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2011_06_20_brarok_yanrok_1
Felix Marte walked three times (must be wrong system)and Troy Snitker hit a HR….
June 20th, 2011 at 1:53 pmGlad you’re back, Mac. MRSA infections are bad news and quite unpleasant.
June 20th, 2011 at 2:09 pmMRSA infections are bad news and quite unpleasant.
I will henceforth exclusively be referring to Fredi Gonzalez as “MRSA Infection.”
June 20th, 2011 at 2:15 pm#8
How about Mr. Potato Head?
June 20th, 2011 at 2:21 pmStu, that is the best idea I have heard all week. I refuse to refer to our manager as anything other than MRSA infection.
Also, Mac, I’m very happy that you no longer have an abscess, even though our team continues to do so.
June 20th, 2011 at 2:26 pmSo can we just use “MRSA” and make it easy?
June 20th, 2011 at 2:33 pmCan unwanted Proctologists be a side effect of MRSA infections?
June 20th, 2011 at 2:37 pm11—Works for me. Gah, MRSA has really crippled this team.
June 20th, 2011 at 2:41 pmSee, its perfect.
June 20th, 2011 at 2:43 pmFine by me. Shame his initials aren’t “SA”. Well, it could stand for “Mister Stupid Ass”.
June 20th, 2011 at 3:03 pmMRSA rosterbating again…
Schafer
June 20th, 2011 at 3:08 pmAAG
Heyward
Freeman
Uggla
Ross
McLouth
Hernandez
Hudson
I never thought I’d say this about Brooks Conrad and anyone else in our organization, but I actually think he’s a better 3rd baseman than Diory. Also, gotta’ love Diory’s .233 avg and .233 obp.
June 20th, 2011 at 3:17 pmLooks like a Dixie Youth lineup.
June 20th, 2011 at 3:18 pm17 — I agree. At least Conrad can hit.
Glad you’re feeling better Mac.
June 20th, 2011 at 3:21 pmMRSA didnt notice that AAG is 0-15 in his past 4 games with 7k’s? Hey, lets move him into the #2 spot!
June 20th, 2011 at 3:24 pm@20, hey it got Uggla on the right path, didn’t it?
June 20th, 2011 at 3:34 pmThe Marlins named 80 year old Jack McKeon as their interim manager (again).
You know what would be nice? If Heyward went on a tear.
June 20th, 2011 at 3:40 pmGlad to have you back Mac.
“SA” as initials don’t work so well here in Germany (these days). Let’s stick to MRSA. One more letter than AAG, three less than Frenchy. The higher the suckitude, the more letters I guess.
As for our lineup, there is just one word: ugly. I predict three GIDP by AAG tonight.
June 20th, 2011 at 3:40 pm@21 – nope, he’s still hitting .176
June 20th, 2011 at 3:50 pmThey put Uggla in the two hole, and he responded by hitting for two whole games there.
June 20th, 2011 at 3:58 pm@24 I know, kidding.
June 20th, 2011 at 4:02 pmI figured you were being sarcastic.
June 20th, 2011 at 4:50 pmWas at the Saturday game (rain delay & all) & Uggla’s double off the wall was really smacked. At the crack of the bat—and it was one loud crack—I sure thought it was going out.
Obvious Dept.: If we’re going to do anything at all this year, we just gotta get something out of our 2B & RF.
BTW, it was great to see you other other day, Spike. I ate at Fox’s again on Saturday & Sunday. That stuff’s the real deal.
June 20th, 2011 at 4:51 pm23- Nah. Schafer won’t get on base three times.
Seriously, two hitters in that lineup are slugging over .400 or have OPS+ of 100 or more. One guy with an OBP over .336 (and he bats sixth). Hudson had better be at his best.
June 20th, 2011 at 4:56 pmI think McLouth ought to lead off and Schafer go to 7th or 8th.
June 20th, 2011 at 5:10 pm@28, Glad to hip you to a touchstone. Shame you aren’t here on Wednesday for my little Nat king Cole trio act.
June 20th, 2011 at 5:12 pmIf you’re talking Fox Bros BBQ, it is indeed the real deal. And I’m glad someone found a workable concept for that space. It used to be a tamale joint that I liked quite a bit, but after an initial push it failed to fly. But, you know, barbecue. Duh.
June 20th, 2011 at 5:54 pmYup, Fox Bros.
And it’s nice to get real collards & okra, too.
June 20th, 2011 at 5:58 pmI’m predicting a 20-3 blow out with three homers from Bautista, at least one being a grand slam.
Anything else will be a pleasant surprise.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:08 pmI see Angel Hernandez, traditionally one of the worst home plate umpires in baseball, is the home plate umpire tonight.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:14 pmAngel Hernandez AND Joe West in the same crew? I’m going to go ahead and get preemptively upset about all the terrible calls and showboating as well.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:15 pmI think Eric Gregg and Bill Hahn are on the crew as well
June 20th, 2011 at 6:21 pmhah, would’ve been a gidp. counting it as #1
June 20th, 2011 at 6:22 pmThere’s one way to avoid the DP…
June 20th, 2011 at 6:22 pmIt’s “heywaRd”, brian jordan. not “heywad”
June 20th, 2011 at 6:24 pmCome on Freddie….
Bah. Oh, and Brian Jordan makes me hate baseball.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:24 pmAngel’s zone is awful, of course
June 20th, 2011 at 6:25 pmWhat happened to Chip? He was a colossal moron and terrible announcer, but I’d take that every day over the droning sycophant twins of Gant & Jordan.
I’d trade a prospect for a REAL PBP guy. I’d trade Terehan for a lifetime Boog Sciambi contract.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:29 pmJack McKeon’s first act as Marlins manager was to bench Hanley for not hustling yesterday and for showing up late to the ballpark today. This could get fun.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:35 pmThere is a real PBP guy. Turn on the radio, and the awesome Jim Powell is on the Braves Radio Network.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:35 pmJoe Simpson does every game it seems and they rotate Glavine, Jordan, Chip and Gant. I like Joe and Glavine. Wonder why they don’t let Chip do more? Seems odd (though he sucks)
June 20th, 2011 at 6:36 pmJoe identified a 91 mph pitch from Hudson a changeup. He played the game so he knows these sorts of things.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:38 pmUnless we get a lucky solo homer we’re likely to get shut out.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:40 pmChip doesn’t do the peachtree tv games (despite the production looking the same, Chip was under contact with FSN and SportSouth…not peachtree) these are the equivalent of the games last yr that joe did with john smoltz…
June 20th, 2011 at 6:42 pmOf course FSN doesn’t show the OBP and slugging difference between Yunel and AAG.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:42 pmWhy is Frediot playing Diory over Conrad? Diory brings nothing to the table but sucking.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:44 pmTwo possibilities: either Fredlot thinks Diory still might, just might, have a future, while Conrad’s confirmed to be a AAAA player; or his heart can’t take the horrors of Conrad putting on a glove.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:51 pmI just want to piggyback on the Fox Bros rec. I try to hit it whenever I’m in town.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:53 pmI’m ready to put McLouth back into the leadoff spot too.
June 20th, 2011 at 6:58 pm43—So would I. But, I gotta say, I’m enjoying the fact that he’s calling this VU-UF game.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:00 pmJust got here. I really appreciated the Phil Collins tribute.
Mac, when you get back in shape can we get a special tribute to the Big Man?
June 20th, 2011 at 7:03 pmAt this rate, we’ll be through 9 innings before 9 EST.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:15 pmOf course, we won’t actually be done by then.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:16 pmJordan just called Matt Garza “Gaza”. Can’t say the letter “r”.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:23 pm@ 59- That just gave me a nasty Chris Berman shudder. Matt Garza “Strip.” Ugh.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:32 pmHeyward has done nothing this year but ground out to first… and when that might help, he grounds out to 3rd…
June 20th, 2011 at 7:40 pmDammit.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:41 pmHeyward had a 3-1 pitch and grounded out to the left side; Uggla had a 2-0 pitch and rolled into a DP. This is why our offense can’t do nice things.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:42 pmBut Uggla won’t vary from the plan! True to form groundball to third! This time for gidp.
Butt-uggla..
June 20th, 2011 at 7:43 pmDan Uggla, the cure for all control problems.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:46 pmHudson can go three more innings at this rate. And we’ll need him to.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:47 pmDiory sucks. Has to be my least favorite player.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:53 pmLOL
June 20th, 2011 at 7:53 pmTIM! Well, if you want a job done right, kill Fredlot before you start.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:54 pmOh my god
June 20th, 2011 at 7:54 pmHUDDDDDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 20th, 2011 at 7:54 pm(Forget)you Jobu… I do it myself.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:55 pmany chance Huddy can play 2b?!
June 20th, 2011 at 7:57 pmBetween innings Hudson went in the stands and sold beer and helped an old lady to her seat.
June 20th, 2011 at 7:58 pmSuperman!
Chuck Norris wears Tim Hudson pajamas.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:02 pmJoe pulled a Chip Caray there and almost blew out my computer speakers. At least his reaction was justified. Have a night, Huddy.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:03 pmHudson’s mighty swing has caused a wind advisory in Omaha.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:06 pmI will say this for Brian Jordan: the word “patient” is in his vocabulary when talking about hitting, which automatically would make him a better hitting coach than Larry Parrish.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:06 pm@78
You might be on to something. Of course, Tim Hudson is going to be our new hitting coach.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:08 pmYou know, Brian Jordan is totally terrible in the booth.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:12 pmGet the lefty out before Uggla gets a chance to feast. Smart move, Cito Gaston? Carlos Tosca? John Farrell? No clue.
Hey! John Farrell was a total lucky guess. I kind of thought he was the one with the fake war stories (Tim Johnson?).
June 20th, 2011 at 8:16 pmHeyward has twice as many SBs as anyone on this team not named Jordan.
And yes, Tim Johnson was the guy with the fake war stories.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:18 pmIs anyone else really concerned about Heyward’s batted ball tendencies? He has a 55% ground ball percentage–again–and a remarkably high 20.5% Infield Fly Percentage. He’s not driving the ball, and he’s not even hitting fly balls, both of which are pre-requisites for any power hitter.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:19 pm@81
Well, it isn’t like he is killing right handers either
June 20th, 2011 at 8:19 pm@83
He smoked a ball earlier in the game for a double.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:20 pmGet well soon, Mac.
My mom had a MRSA infection last fall. Picture. (Not for the weak of heart.)
June 20th, 2011 at 8:21 pmMy fantasy team BA is .256. Subtract Uggla, and it is .264. I’ve been doing this long enough to know a hot streak is coming, but I’m pulling the Pluggla. You can thank me later.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:22 pmMore booing of Fredi please.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:23 pmIs there any way we can use EOF, Venters, and Kimbrel this game?
June 20th, 2011 at 8:23 pm85 – Oh, well that solves everything.
Bautista is lurking as the go-ahead run. Oy.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:25 pmDon’t like this move.
Why would anyone pay Angel Hernandez to do anything?
June 20th, 2011 at 8:26 pmBian Jodan sucks.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:26 pmGO TO HELL ANGEL.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:26 pmAwful awful awful call.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:27 pmHow was that not a strike?
June 20th, 2011 at 8:27 pmPerfect time for Angel Hernandez to shrink his zone.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:27 pm@83, I was concerned about that last year. He’s got the swing plane of a slap hitter. He’ll never hit with as much power as we want him to until he drops his hands some. Nobody is going to dare to mess with him though since he’s the anointed super-prospect. Maybe one day he’ll just figure it out for himself.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:27 pmOh, not this guy
June 20th, 2011 at 8:27 pmDamn, what a pitch!
June 20th, 2011 at 8:29 pmYES!!!! Way to go, Kimbrel and Hudson!
June 20th, 2011 at 8:32 pmKimbrel was nasty
June 20th, 2011 at 8:32 pmCraig Kimbrel’s a stud. Tim Hudson’s a stud. No one else who took the field tonight is a stud.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:32 pmGood Kimbrel showed up!
June 20th, 2011 at 8:32 pmCraig Kimbrel is damn fun to watch when he’s got it working.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:32 pmHot damn.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:33 pmThis guy can pitch a little bit.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:33 pmFun game
June 20th, 2011 at 8:34 pmGreat job by Kimbrel. I was a little apprehensive about him coming in with the tying runs already on, but that was electric.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:34 pm@102, I thought Ross called a good game today and he even forced an error by hustling down the line.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:34 pmThis offense is sad….SAD!!!!
Glad to know Tim figured out that he can’t rely on the offense to score runs.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:04 pmThat has to be a confidence booster for Kimbrel. I don’t see how anyone ever even makes contact when he’s throwing like he did tonight. That is just not a very “comfortable” at bat for a righty.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:07 pmRecapped on tiny keyboard, excuse any typos.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:13 pmThe third strike on Bautista was un-hittable…96 at the knees on the outside corner…just sick
June 20th, 2011 at 9:13 pm
