Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves – Box Score – October 01, 2010 – ESPN.
LP – Beachy, (0-2)
So damned unfair. The kid went out there and pitched great. He allowed seven hits, almost any one of which could have been an out with a good defensive play, walked one batter (intentionally) and struck out five. He left with two out in the sixth and the game still tied at two. By the end of the inning, he’d been charged with two “unearned” runs and the game was a rout.
The Braves took the lead in the first when Jason Heyward walked and then scored ahead of a Derrek Lee double, though Melky, still inexplicably in the fifth spot, quickly made the third out of the inning. Beachy was cruising, having allowed one hit (off of Alex Gonzalez‘s glove). Ryan Howard, with one out, got just about the only clean hit the Phillies got off of Beachy, a single to center. A single to left that a real outfielder (that is, not Melky) might have had a play on followed, and then Beachy got a double-play grounder up the middle that AAG whiffed on to tie the game. Another Melky special, with two out, made it 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lee came through again, singling in Beachy himself (who had walked leading off the inning). With two out, Melky popped up the first pitch to end the inning. But in the sixth, Nate McLouth misplayed a fly ball into a double, Beachy walked the next man, and then got a strikeout, before being lifted for Peter Moylan. Moylan did his job, getting a grounder to Brooks Conrad at third base, and from that point on nothing went right all night. Conrad wanted to go the short way to second, Omar Infante was nowhere near the bag, and instead of adjusting and throwing to first, Conrad threw to Omar anyway, all hands safe, E-5. Moylan walked the go-ahead run in, and then Jimmy Rollins hit a grand slam off of Michael Dunn to put the game away. The Phillies got four more runs off of Cristhian Martinez and Mike Minor in the eighth. All the Braves could do is get J.C. Boscan in the game late. He walked to load the bases, and Lee came up with his third RBI hit of the night, a bases-clearing double to make the score a little more respectable.
Katy Perry.
I think the Phillies are better at playing baseball than we are.
Just saw that Caleb Sturgis will miss the game tomorrow, surprisingly not because he was arrested.
We should play a game. One screwdriver for each time Chipper refers to Bobby as a “favorite grand dad.”
Yeah, that was tough, but i loved the late runs. I know it’s ‘garbage time’, but it gives you a little good feeling coming out of the game, and you can think things like, if Brooks throws to first and then catches Utley’s foul pop in the 8th, we would have been right in that game, and we still have that late-inning offensive resiliency. Those are some bad errors. He’s our third-string 3B, so what do you expect? But maybe he gets some of those things ironed out.
All we need to do is win tomorrow. We’re going to get this. Don’t we have Hanson tomorrow? and Hudson on tap?
and i do wish i had that espn insider, cuz Buster Olney posted something about comparing the Braves to the ’88 Dodgers, another team that had great stretches but didn’t end up with the best of lineups due to injuries and what not, and still pieced a postseason together with clutch hits here and there to win a world series.
That’s definitely the blueprint i’m working with here.
Since 1990, Our Braves dominated the Phillies forever with the exception of a few obvious years. We, as Braves fans should not give a damn about the Phillies. At least, I dont…
Go Braves!!
With Chip making comments like “We don’t know who the Braves will play in the first round” and FSS telling us all to tune into their special playoff postgame shows, I’m becoming convinced we will miss the postseason.
Conrad admitted that he messed up and apologized to the team. Meanwhile, has Melky ONCE admitted that he sucks and is killing the team and destroying all that is good and holy? NO.
Does anyone know if there are any subscription packages for Latin American games televised this winter?
Sweet jumpin’ jeebus, Giants, do you dopes want to win the West or not? How is it even physically possible to give up 6 runs to this team? With, I’m assuming, more to come?
@8, It’s hard to apologize with a mouth full of Cheetos.
Kendrick is the sort of pitcher this team would have eaten up earlier in the year. He was not throwing strikes, it would have been easy to just let him beat himself.
Tonight’s the night the Braves wanted to do business. Tomorrow, they face a guy they’ve never seen (we know how that goes with this team) and Sunday they face Cole Hamels (we know how that goes). With the Pads putting up a fight in SF–the kind of fight the Braves couldn’t put up last week against the Phils on their home turf–things don’t look good at all.
Bethany @ 12: Agreed. AAG and Brooks both swung at pitches that Escobar and Chipper would have probably taken to work walks. And Melky killed a couple of would-be rallies as well–earlier in the year he seemed to be showing a little more patience. Or maybe he didn’t, but his free–swinging ways did less damage with more patient guys in the line-up around him.
Ugh. I was going to watch every game, no matter how pessimistic I felt or painful it got, but I think I’m going to bail. I’ll go see a couple of movies tomorrow and Sunday, and if the Braves surprise me, I’ll watch them in postseason. Maybe the sweep of the Marlins was as good as it gets with this team.
Tomorrow is most favorable pitching matchup of the weekend. We pretty much have to win.
We have the worst outfield in the majors defensively (Heyward is even kinda shakey but at least he can run and throw). Given that all our options are terrible for CF and LF, I would err on the side of putting in the guys that at least have a little power. Play Diaz or Hinske in LF and Ankiel in CF. That’s my least-worse lineup.
Bobby’s faith in Melky is disturbing, what does he see that everyone else doesn’t?
If the Pads hang on they will be 6-1 at SF this year, a sweep is a real possibility. And of course the Braves being swept is also a very real possibility. A 2 game lead with 3 to play and blowing it, now that would be choke city.
6-4 pads going to the eighth…
Bobby’s faith in Melky is disturbing, what does he see that everyone else doesn’t?
Friend of mine never bitches about the Braves. When something inexplicable happens, he says “Yeah. Well. You know Bobby drinks a little, right?”
Melky is doing so much damage out there. And now he’s batting 5th! 5th!!!
What is happening? Has the world gone mad? Is Bobby Cox perpetrating some joke as he retires? What is the punchline?
This may be a stupid question, and it may not even be possible, but what would happen if a team is tied for both the wild card and the division…
Well Cox and Melky were both Yankees so maybe that’s it. Of course Hinske was a Yankee too but he can’t sniff the field despite being one of our first half MVP’s and swinging the bat well lately.
@ 20 Playoff for the division, loser plays again for the wild card.
Sanchez is an idiot, his run meant nothing there.
That’s it, Pads win, lead down to 1.
What if we choke again and lose the wildcard, on Bobby’s final day? I feel physically ill.
Relax. The Phillies want us in the playoffs, not the Padres. They know they can beat us at will, while the Padres are unpredictable. They will let us win tomorrow and even on sunday if necessary.
You guys really think the Giants are gonna get swept at home when one game wins the division? I don’t.
26 — The Phillies can’t play someone from the same division in the first round.
@26 Tom, They aren’t running their best out there but it’s still more than enough to sweep us. The players that are put in still play the game, they don’t care who it’s against.
@27 Nick, The Padres are 6-1 at SF this year, a sweep is very much in the cards.
28, you don’t say!
29, they certainly did on Friday, but I doubt that they will on Saturday. We’ll see.
FUWren,
heyward’s defense is shaky? right…
Still not time to panic
@5 Troy
Exactly the kind of thinking I needed to hear Saturday morning.
Go Braves!
I think we will win one and the Pads will lose one, but the best case scenario is probably both of us winning out.
The Braves control their destiny. Win today and maybe you don’t have to start Hanson tomorrow.
30 — Well, I don’t see your point, because the Phillies aren’t going to lose on purpose.
Tommy needs to drill Rollins in the earhole on the first pitch.
———–
If the Braves lose and Florida wins tonight, I’m jumping off the Talahatchee Bridge.
(If I can find it.)
(If it exists.)
@29
I’m aware of that stat, but I’m pretty sure that has more to do with them playing those games back when the Padres were the best team in the league than some sort of hex on the Giants. The Giants are the better team now, and they’re not gonna get swept.
NO MELKY!
1. Infante 2B, 2. Heyward RF, 3. McCann C, 4. Lee 1B, 5. Conrad 3B, 6. McLouth LF, 7. Gonzalez SS, 8. Ankiel CF, 9. Hanson
“NO MELKY!”
Cox really wants to win today.
Since bad defense torpedoed us last night, it appears Bobby is going back to his defensive-minded lineup.
Conrad batting 5th is certainly better than some other options.
for those unaware, the braves’ home site will be broadcasting the bobby cox tribute @3:30 eastern.
I put up a new tagline…
4 racks of ribs on the grill, just need a Braves and Crimson Tide victory to go along with them
Good one Mac
I just saw something that is hard to believe, but true. Bruce Chen is the first Royals lefty to win 12 or more games since Charlie Leibrandt.
Very nice ceremony for Bobby.
Looks like the Phils are using the first stringers.
as they should be.
Were all the players, including the Phils, out on the field for Bobby’s ceremony?
Pads up 1-0 with bases loaded in the 1st
edit: 2-0 now, Zito has walked three and given up 2 hits
oh great…. NYY vs BOS here in Florida.
Zito is melting down.
Go Braves.
Freaking Zito.
Who’s doing color for FOX today? Because he was just whining about a strike call that Ibanez, um, swung at.
Good lord, McCann.
Fox Saturday games screw me once again. And of all the games to be blacked out on too.
that was Jeffyesque Bmac
That looked like a Francoeur swing by McCann.
BMac was guessing all the way.
Force them to come inside BMAC, come on!
If Frenchy is in the playoffs and the Braves are not I will do something hyperbolic.
So, is Mac going to throw the ball into CF again?
He didn’t get a chance. Great play by AAG.
how is that not interference?
Wow, nicely done Agony.
Should have just thrown at Victorino. It was a free shot.
Hanson pulling a Russ Ortiz, so far
DOn’t swing NAte!
Edit: That was not a strike. He didn’t give tommy that pitch.
Pads up 3-0
Padres now up 3-0. Ugh.
God we suck.
This umpire sucks.
Joyce missed ball 4 twice, somehow called both of them strikes, He’s never missed any calls before
Louther.
This umpire is BS. Hanson wasn’t getting anything even close to that.
yeah, my hate for AAG is irrational
I’m not watching the Giants/Padres; is San Fran wearing their best red pumps and lipstick? Idiots.
More free outs on the bases.
random question: anyone know of braves bars in san francisco? i live here and as you can imagine, they’re not showing the game many places.
csg, your hate is not irrational
Nates OBP .295
A-Gons OPB .294 (with Braves)
In fairness, the 3 – 0 pitch to Ibanez should have been ball 4.
Hanson? Nibbling? I’m shocked.
Utley scares the hell out of me.
Hanson has really good stuff today. Howard and Ibanez looked terrible.
Zito managed to go 3+ innings only. Pulled with runners on 1st and 2nd, none out.
But not especially good location. The Russ Ortiz game continues: let the lessors guy on, then get Utley, Howard and Ibanez to get out of it.
4-0 Pads.
This is getting really tense.
Did the Giants really have no one better than Zito to throw out there today?
I just made up a word.
Lincecum already pitched a couple of days ago. And Cain pitched yesterday. Tomorrow’s Jonathan Sanchez.
They lined Lincecum up to give him the longest rest before the postseason, or so that he could pitch in the one game playoff.
What happens if SD and SF are tied for the West and we are in a three-way tie with them for the wildcard. Is it just tiebreaker between them followed by tiebreaker with us? Who hosts?
#91
Padres host Giants on Monday. And Braves hosts loser on tuesday.
@92 Thanks.
Padres host Giants on Monday. And Braves hosts loser on tuesday.
So essentially the Padres and Giants get two shots at getting into the playoffs and the Braves get one?
“Glasses down for Rick Ankiel” as his glasses sit on the back of his head.
Dick Stockton is a moron. “Glasses down for Ankiel” and he doesn’t even have any glasses unless they’re hanging on the back of his cap.
#95 jajaja
My thoughts exactly.
#94 Yeah. Division trumps wildcard.
95 MPH “Called strike on a slider”
Not as bad as Chip. He called him Calfkiel and said he had to leap over the wall to get it.
“#94 Yeah. Division trumps wildcard.”
Yeah, but after the hypothetical one-game playoff for the NL West division title: one of the Padres/Giants would lose game #163. Meaning they’d have one more loss than the Braves and thus there would be no need for a wild card playoff game.
We cannot keep allowing Brian Schneider on-base in this game.
#94, the Braves surrendered their first shot by not winning the division.
I wonder what Tommy’s pitch count limit is today. No reason to hold back if he still has his stuff, and I’d like to see him get through 7 innings.
100 — They did away with that rule.
The media is going to find a way not to give Jason Hewyard the Rookie of the Year.
Of course ABs like that aint helping.
Eric Karros’ argument for Buster Posey: “Heyward doesn’t steal a lot of bases.”
Apparently Posey is Rickey Henderson.
Eric Karros just gave one of the most incoherent descriptions of Jason Heyward’s game I’ve ever heard.
Are we going to get no-hit by a random September call-up?
Thanks, Derrek.
FOx announcer on Heyward: Yeah, he gets on base, that is “nice”.
Talk about a stupid comment.
Edit: I did not know it was Karros. It figures.
YES!!! GO LEE GO.
Lee was a good pickup.
At least some dorky looking guy will not no hit us.
Son of a bitch our offense blows.
vent:
ya know, i like the patience. i really do. but, how many times lately have we had a hitters count only to stare at a “get me over” fast ball right down the pipe?
Tommy Hanson doesn’t Know How to Win.
Here’s the inning where we lose the game.
What’s more incompetent: Our offense or Les Miles?
Buster “Rickey” Posey is 0-2 in SB attempts, FWIW.
Pitch right down the middle for a ball.
Ibanez hasn’t come close to the fastball all day. Throw him another one.
McCann’s had a couple of incredible stops with Rollins at third.
can we not get a close call? really?
@113 The thing is these guys can’t do anything with a get over pitch either.
One more great stop.
Do I love Tommy Hanson, or am I in love with Tommy Hanson?
one hell of a stop by AAG
Strange pitch selection and it was hit hard, but he’s out.
Hey! This pessimism thing works!
Tommy is dancing with wolves here. Will this team EVER score any runs for him?
This is the inning they score. I can FEEL it.
If Ankiel and Hanson weren’t due after AAG, I would endorse a bunt.
Seriously? A sac bunt? I hate the world.
the magneticism of nate’s necklace makes his vision better.
nate mclouth aka magneto!
aag is the best sac bunt on the team. maybe he should look at doing that every atbat.
They’re gonna pinch hit for Hanson? I don’t like the sound of this
AAG, not having bunted in a year, has put down three perfect sac bunts in the last week.
I miss Blanco.
in this situation, i dont hate the sac bunt.
edit: why cant ankiel hit a fastball anymore?
Pathetic Ankiel!
hanson’s pitch count is at 89. he would have only pitched one more anyway.
Why won’t Bobby start Hinske in left instead of pinch-hitting him in the 5th?
I hope we’re not paying Ankiel too much.
hinske also wears a magnetic necklace. no wonder he hit that homer the other night.
Jim Joyce’s strike zone sucks.
Our offense is hopeless.
Is it me, or does Ankiel look like he’s a pitcher again when he’s in the batters box?
This is where they win the game.
yep, Phils will score here
This is excruciating.
My XM keeps going in and out, is there anybody that has an audio link ??? I would really appreciate it.
I keep hearing Ivan Drago from Rocky IV saying “You will lose”.
u dont want to hear it
I’m not even angry anymore about sac bunts. If AAG hit there, he would have done nothing positive. As it is, he bunted a guy over for Rick Ankiel and Eric Hinske.
The team is not good enough for the playoffs. Right now I wouldn’t take us in a series against Washington.
should Venters face sweeney?
sure wouldnt walk sweeney to face rollins, which is what we’re trying to do
@148, I don’t know of any audio link outside of the MLB pay service.
The Braves Radio Network has pretty good coverage over the southeastern USA, if you’re in that region of the country. http://mlb.mlb.com/atl/schedule/affiliates.jsp is a station list.
Nice, Venters. Nice.
Whew, nicely done, Venters.
Clutch pitching by Venters.
Hanson is out of the game. It’s safe for the Braves to score now.
We needed that.
I’m anticipating a 2 inning stint from Venters.
@148, @153: I sometimes just look through that list to find stations that stream online, and I can usually find one
Joey T, thanks but I’m in New Mexico. I have XM radio, but the signal isn’t strong in my apartment complex. They were just splitscreening it on Fox now though with SD/SF. I’ll sit out in my car the last three if I have to.
All of the stations that people have given me before are playing college football right now.
Good way to start. Come on Brian..
That didn’t even reach the plate. Ugh!
That was predictable.
I’m glad I’m listening on the radio. It’s bad enough.
Has Rollins really gotten that old/slow where they pinch run for him now?
Lead-off walk = run
(except when we’re batting)
God Conrad. Just… god.
Deja vu.
Brooks can’t play 3rd.
Hooray for bad defense.
Live by mediocre players, die by mediocre players.
There’s the game. Maybe Brooks is being paid off.
Ballgame.
The Braves’ playoff odds were 95.8% when this series started. Opps.
For all the talk about how there was no way the Padres sweep and we get swept, that is exactly what is going to happen.
I hate this team. Goodbye. I’ll be back in an hour or so when we are tied for the wild card.
0-2 pitch.
Who’s pitching tomorrow?
Hudson.
62 errors since the break, tied for most in MLB.
That is a damning stat.
Don’t forget: the Phillies aren’t even fielding all of their starters. And this is happening at home, against crappy pitchers.
How do you let Utley steal 2nd??
Talk about shitty defense.
Guess what, Bobby, Venters is done. Thanks.
I guess it doesn’t matter who’s pitching. Our offense couldn’t beat Charlie Morton.
Happy Bobby Cox day.
Bad defense would be easier to tolerate if they were hitting.
Wow, this is ugly.
2 runs down … 3 runs down … doesn’t matter. We can’t hit. Can’t score. Team of utility players gave it a good shot but we don’t have the horses to compete with real teams.
Sorry, this is just too painful. I am going to retire to my vices for the remainder of the evening. ‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky.
Ok, I’d rather watch the rest of the Tenth Inning that this. Atlanta, you have redefined choking.
This is so predictable. You try to use a gassed Venters for 2 innings and you get what you get. I think Bobby has determined that not making the playoffs is preferable to losing in the first round.
Don’t worry, we’ll mash Hamels tomorrow
Are we really going to crap the bed like this? And now he brings in Kimbrel. Like you couldn’t have brought him in to start the 7th? Sometimes I hate Bobby’s bullpen management. Correction, I have always hated Bobby’s bullpen management. Can’t believe they tough it out for 160 games and then collapse at the finish line like this. Man, I hate losing this way.
And a tip of the hat to the Giants, who are playing the Florida Marlinseque whore to San Diego’s Phillies, if that makes any sense at all, which it might not because I’m cheezed.
What the hell was Lee thinking on that strikeout, anyway? Other than DERP.
It’s not Bobby’s fault that we’re relying on Royal/Pirate/Cub dead-weight and that we’ve got a million injuries. I still think it’s a miracle that this team is even still in it. Anything can happen tomorrow…who knows. Karmically we’re due for things to even out a bit. All those teams we took into the playoffs that were just loaded, and all those chokes…the baseball gods owe us one. Maybe if this team of scrubs gets in we’ll see something amazing happen.
the largest crowd in turner field history gets to see this crap of a game.
This just in, America: Eric Karros doesn’t have a clue what “ironic” means.
Talk about a fall from grace. Brooks Conrad: Folk Hero to Scapegoat in one series.
196- I wouldn’t bet on it.
Oh, we had to throw in a run on a passed ball too for the sucky defense trifecta.
Deedle dee dee, derp de deedily ding dong diddily doddly doo. Just awful.
I blame Chip “The Braves don’t know who they’ll face in the first round” Caray.
Can we fire T.P. yet?
We score six the rest of the way. Just need to get out of the inning.
It was only a matter of time before Conrad’s defense would hurt us. There are too many bad defensive players out there–and not enough offense (or any).
No amount of good pitching can make up for bad defense and hitting.
Ken Rosenthal talking crap there. A playoff barely affects our postseason rotation should we get there. We’d have Hanson, Hudson and Lowe all on regular rest in the first 3 games.
seriously, baseball is so frickin’ hard…even as a fan. because of the last 2 days, i cant recall why conrad was one of my favorite braves.
Shut the hell up, Karros, you illiterate Dodger prick. Let’s count your rings, shall we?
ugh
You know something. This is the only way this could be. On Bobby Cox day, the Braves lay just a horrible egg.
I mean, how many of these games have we endured as Braves fans over the years. Countless.
Wow, what a clustercuss that LSU ending was.
OH MY GOD. 12 men on the field, and now they have to play the down.
#211, reminds me of the Mets with Glavine a few years ago.
And LSU wins. Wow.
To be fair, though, it’s not just about the defense. The Braves have two hits. Two. Against a rookie with 10 innings of big league experience and the back of the Phillies (weak) bullpen.
Two hits.
I feel bad for my wife. She is a braves fan, and a Vols fan.
Let’s just say she is not having a good day.
Giants have the tying run on 1st.
Go Giants!
Go Giants.
How bad is the SEC this year?
Pads win. FML.
F***ing Giants.
Jose Guillen grounds into a double play to end it.
That was Braves like.
I hate sports.
Tomorrow will be a very dramatic day.
The Giants could have used a little Bonds power. 😉
EDIT – and forget my previous suggestion. Let’s just get ’em tomorrow.
Remember when we were saying, “Hey, at least we aren’t the Padres?”
Glaus couldn’t be any worse than Conrad at third.
@229
i think you’re very wrong.
At least we aren’t the Pirates.
I don’t have words to describe how I am feeling right now.
Can we at least try to win this game?
Not so sure that Conrad is much of a defensive improvement over Glaus. True, he has better range–Glaus has barely any movement–but Glaus has better hands, footwork, and arm. He’s also a 3B. On both plays that Conrad blew Glaus would have made the play.
That said, I didn’t see Glaus play at AAA. What I read was that he was ok.
Glaus probably hit on Cox’s wife or something.
Braves are trying not to give Glaus AB so they can save his incentives, IMHO.
I think the Phillies are pitching Hamels and Oswalt tomorrow, right? Even if it’s only 2 or 3 innings each, good luck until the bullpen. And when you get to the bullpen, good luck.
Eric Karros is a complete dipshit.
So, do we like Robert Fick now?
Can the Braves and the Giants just win tomorrow and settle all these? Geez.
And Saito has nothing left. I think the only way this day could get worse is if Bobby announces that Hudson re-tore a ligament during a throwing session and Kawakami will start tomorrow.
Better to learn Saito’s shot now than in the sixth or seventh inning of a close game tomorrow, I guess.
Huddy, we’re going to need at least 15 perfect innings tomorrow, probably 20. Maybe the Phillies will just quit caring and forfeit before we can score a run.
No doubt Huddy is going to pitch tomorrow until his arm falls off.
Naturally now that the fans are showing up, the team isn’t.
Recapped. It’s over, guys.
It’s hard to overstate just how awful the team has been these past two games.
As pathetic as today’s game was, I am very positive that the Braves will win tommorrow and the Padres will lose. It can’t all go wrong three out of three times, can it?
