Braves 3, Marlins 2
Florida Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves – Box Score – September 28, 2010 – ESPN.
Eric Hinske sticks an epi pen into the heart of the season!
For six innings, the Braves were a completely different team than last night, in that they were losing 1-0 behind a brilliant pitching performance and they weren’t getting any runners to speak of on base so they could be stranded. Completely different. The Marlins’ lone run off of Tim Hudson came in the third when Melky completely and utterly misplayed a long fly ball into a double. He didn’t even come close to hit, so of course it was scored a hit, though Tim Hudson‘s instant classic reaction to it is yet another nail in the coffin in the “earned”/”unearned” run distinction. The Marlins then got two infield singles to score the run. It was pathetic. And through the first four innings, Melky had the Braves’ only hit. In the fifth, Ankiel reached on an infield single with two out, so you can guess how helpful that was.
Jason Heyward laced a single up the middle with one out in the sixth. He was forced at second on a groundout by Brian McCann. Derrek Lee then hit a double into the corner, Snitker sent McCann, and Brian wasn’t out by more than fifteen feet. In all seriousness, Dan Uggla, the cutoff man, had the ball before McCann rounded third. He double-clutched and didn’t make a particularly good throw, but he could have run Brian out. Snitker is the worst.
But in the seventh, Melky’s second hit of the night was a single leading off the the inning. Alex Gonzalez bunted him over, which… whatever… but Brooks Conrad, Folk Hero, was on the case. Conrad tripled off the wall in right-center (Cameron Maybin was injured trying to make the catch) and tied the game. Ankiel, typically, struck out when a fly ball would have given the Braves the lead, but Eric Hinske, the missing man of late, hit a high homer to right field to make the game 3-1.
They needed that second run, because Peter Moylan allowed a leadoff homer to Uggla. He got the next man, then gave way to fellow ubiquity Jonny Venters, who gave up an infield single (the Marlins had lots of them, all night) but then got a GIDP to end it. Billy Wagner had one of his no-touch outings, striking out Wes Smelms, then walking Emilio Bonafacio, only to strike out the next two. Same old, same old.
UPDATE: I am reminded that Craig Kimbrel, who got the win for pitching the seventh, struck out the side, looking particularly unhittable as he did. I figure there should be a ceremony where Bobby hands the keys to Kimbrel over to Fredi Gonzalez and says, “Here, ruin him. Do it for me.”

No comment on The Filthy Craig Kimbrel? I think that should be his official Braves’ Journal moniker, btw.
EDIT: One ‘l’ in Kimbrel.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:08 pmThanks for the recap, Mac, I had to leave after the 2nd inning.
So very close…
September 28th, 2010 at 9:11 pmI was in despair for awhile. The thought of being one hit by Anabelle Sanchez being too much to bear.
Huddy was running on guts and adrenaline tonight. What a gamer.
Why isn’t Nate starting in CF? Ankiel sucks.
mlb.tv isn’t too bad even though it crashed my mac twice. at least I think it was flash. anyway great win. Great tribute by Jayson Stark on Bobby too.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:12 pmWell, Louth also sucks. They’re better than Melky, who both sucks and blows, but not so much that you’ll notice the difference. (Man, I wish Schafer hadn’t imploded.)
September 28th, 2010 at 9:14 pmBaseball Tonight said the Giants are moving Lincecum up a day to pitch against the D’Backs tomorrow- allowing him to pitch on three days’ rest on Sunday if needed.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:16 pmSomeone needs to create one of those Internet thumbnails with the short video clip that repeats over and over (I’m sure there’s a proper name for it, I just don’t know what it is) with the clip of Hinske hitting the ball and admiring it in the background, and Sanchez swearing so violently that his hat flies off in the foreground. I would probably watch it for 15 straight minutes before even remotely beginning to get sick of it.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:19 pmDBacks can easily outscore SF. Here’s hoping that they do just that. Would be nice if the final game or two against Philly didnt mean anything
September 28th, 2010 at 9:21 pmI want to see what Melky did earlier to cause a reaction from Huddy
September 28th, 2010 at 9:22 pmI want to see a .gif of Huddy’s reaction, if anyone could do that.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:24 pmHere’s the end of the Melky play.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:27 pmThe Padres have a sandpile beyond their outfield wall with “Believe” sculpted into it (I just saw it on WGN). Given how well that worked for us last year, I feel really relieved.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:42 pm#6, that would probably be a “You’re the Man Now, Dog.”
September 28th, 2010 at 9:42 pmAriz with bases loaded in the 2nd – 1 out
pitcher hit a sac fly 1-0 Ariz
September 28th, 2010 at 9:43 pmThe Cubs announcing crew is even more inane than Chip and Joe. They’ve spent this entire half-inning talking about a Mexican superhero that somebody came to the park dressed as.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:49 pmHappy days are here again
except for Prado and his kind kin
I love Bobby until he blows again
happy days are here again
(everyone knows that the Phillies come into the Ted and end our season, right?)
September 28th, 2010 at 9:55 pmMac…on another note, Bama looks poised for another repeat this year.
I’m hoping my Clemson boys can finally win another damned conf championship.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:59 pmI wish you’d beaten Auburn, they’re starting to yap again and I don’t want to wait until November for them to be put in their place.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:02 pmI dont think Auburn beats Arkansas, however, theyll be favored in every game until the Iron Bowl
KJ doing what he does, just hit his 26th…2-0 now
September 28th, 2010 at 10:03 pmFukudome doubles to score Koyie Hill. 1-0 Cubs again.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:08 pmRBI double by Fukudome scores “unearned” run. Especially “unearned” since the error was on Latos. 1-0 Cubs. Also, 2-0 D-Backs.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:09 pmYeah, that always kind of bugged me. The run’s still the pitcher’s fault, so it seems to make sense for it to be earned.
Cubs get another run on a bad throw by Tejada, on a play where he couldn’t have gotten an out anyway.
Dodgers lead Rockies 8-6 in the 8th. Rockies are eliminated with a loss.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:11 pmTejada retardedly throws on a sure infield single and wings it into the dugout. That one might be rightfully unearned. 2-0 Cubs.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:12 pmsure wouldve been nice for Torres to wait and return after this Ariz series
September 28th, 2010 at 10:14 pmYeah, Brian J. Even if you buy the whole unearned run rule, it still makes zero sense not to have an error on the pitcher count for an earned run. Either that or we should start having a designated fielder stand next to them.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:15 pmI think that if you have Miguel Tejada playing shortstop in 2010, you’re earning every run he gives back on defense.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:15 pmFor pete’s* sake, this Padres team is worse than we are!
*van weiren, i suppose
September 28th, 2010 at 10:15 pmI could probably spend about 15 minutes talking about how much Aramis Ramirez pisses me off.
@23: At least it means he should be warm for their series with the Padres.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:17 pmI didn’t get to watch the game but did catch 10th Inning on PBS. Great movie by Ken Burns. God, I love baseball.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:23 pmi dont know if this was posted but it’s a paragraph from francoeur’s tribute to bobby cox:
September 28th, 2010 at 10:25 pm“And then of course, probably the greatest story was when I got tossed the first time in ‘06 out in San Diego right after the All-Star break. I’ll never forget it. I got tossed and Bobby got tossed and we come in and I’m like, ‘What do I do?’ He said, ‘Go have a couple cold beers and get in the cold tub or something and relax. And then you’ll probably have to write a $500 check. Or you can do what I do, write a $10,000 one and tell them when it runs out, let me know.”
Pod People tie it up on a HR by Hundley.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:27 pm@17 – you’ll forgive some fans for not recognizing your divine right in the matter.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:27 pmNick Hundley with a two-run homer to tie it up. Dempster’s losing it a bit here.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:28 pmSF and SD tie it up at 2-2 at about the same time.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:30 pmIt is weird that Nick Hundley isn’t related to Randy and Todd, isn’t it?
September 28th, 2010 at 10:33 pmAnd the Rockies almost do the same, but Spilborghs strikes out with the bases loaded. 8-7 Dodgers going to the 9th.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:35 pmSoriano!
September 28th, 2010 at 10:38 pmTwo-run HR by Soriano. 4-2 Cubs.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:38 pmAlfonso Soriano! For the first time ever, I love you! Two-run homer, 4-2 Cubs!
September 28th, 2010 at 10:38 pmSoriano!!!!
September 28th, 2010 at 10:38 pmI’m pretty sure we eliminated the Rockies by winning tonight. We’re five ahead of them with four games left to play.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:38 pmNick, that’s exactly what I thought. A pleasant chemical reaction in my brain followed something Alfonso Soriano did. What a strange feeling!
September 28th, 2010 at 10:41 pm@Mac
Especially since he’s a catcher. It wouldn’t be nearly as weird if it weren’t for that, but since he is one, I was operating under the assumption that he was Randy’s son and Todd’s brother all the way up until a couple months ago.
It would be like if another catching Molina showed up and he wasn’t one of the Molina brothers.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:42 pmColorado still has 5 games after tonight, and if they win tonight they’d be 4.5 back. They’re pretty much all but eliminated, and the next Braves win/Rockies loss makes it official.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:44 pm39- The Rockies have six games left to play (counting tonight). If they win all their games and we lose ours, we’d both finish at 89-73.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:44 pmAnd they’d have to hope for either SF or SD to lose almost all of them too.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:45 pmSoriano absolutely golfed that pitch, by the way. It might have hit him in the foot had he not hit it.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:46 pmWild Card Standings at this moment.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:46 pmThere are (according to a SURELY authoritative website) 8382 people in the United States with the last name “Hundley”. The odds against two unrelated Hundleys both being major league catchers must surely be astronomical.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:48 pmWe get Andrew Miller tomorrow against the Marlins. Miller is 1-4 with an 8.19 ERA this year. He’s pitched in parts of the last 5 years and has a 15-25 record with a 5.78 ERA. His only win – you guessed it – was when he only allowed one run the last time he pitched against us. Let’s hope Miller’s luck has run out!
September 28th, 2010 at 10:49 pmHave we resigned to the fact that Fredi will be our next manager?
September 28th, 2010 at 10:51 pm@18 Yes, I think Auburn definitely loses to Arkansas and Alabama, and probably one or two more.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:51 pm@49
I think so. Him strangely turning down an interview (not the job, an interview) with the Cubs was quite revealing on the topic.
I do think that, of the available Cox disciples (Guillen has already signed an extension with the White Sox), he’s probably the best. We could definitely do worse.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:58 pmHave you seen the rest of their schedule? They’ve already essentially clinched bowl eligibility (four wins with ULM and Chattanooga in pocket). They go to Ole Miss, who are woeful, and host Georgia, who are even worse. So 8-4 is basically the floor, and neither Kentucky nor LSU are world-beaters. Kentucky can’t play defense, and LSU’s offense can’t even figure out what the ball looks like.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:59 pm48- That’s a textbook jinx if I’ve ever seen one.
Rockies lose, rendering the debate academic.
September 28th, 2010 at 10:59 pm@49, i am not so sure. Fredi’s clearly the odds-on favorite, but I bet Torre at least gets a phone call.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:00 pmIt’s still Auburn. They are due at least one choke, likely against Georgia.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:03 pmThe chances of our front office paying Torre what he wants are about as astronomical as the chances of a Major League catcher named Hundley not being related to the Hundleys. (Although clearly that has happened, so there’s always a chance, I guess.)
The Padres are kicking the ball all over the yard.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:03 pmAuburn might choke, but Georgia’s throat is full of concrete.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:04 pmSF now up 3-2. Our old friend, Mike Hampton, on in relief for the Dbacks. Hampton has pitched in all of 2-2/3 innings this year.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:05 pmTurn on the Baseball Network NOW. The Diamondbacks brought in Mike Hampton to keep them in the game.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:05 pmI guess Hampton managed to get out of the inning?
September 28th, 2010 at 11:08 pmYep.
Okay, NOW the Rockies are eliminated.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:09 pm1 out with 2 on base for the Pads.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:13 pmDempster in a jam with 2 runners on. Game on WGN.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:13 pmSee if you can see the ass crack…
September 28th, 2010 at 11:21 pmDempster gets out of it! Still 4-2 Cubs after 7.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:21 pmDempster with 3 straight K’s to end the threat.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:21 pmDempster strikes out 3 men in a row to get out of it. Padres choke.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:22 pm64- Only ass crack I can find is whoever made Uggla’s HR available as a highlight but not Hinske’s. (To be fair, Conrad’s triple is available.)
September 28th, 2010 at 11:23 pmSORIANO AGAIN!
September 28th, 2010 at 11:26 pmSoriano goes deep again! 5-2 Cubs.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:26 pm68 — He’s talking about the doofus fan who picked up the ball while not wearing a belt.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:27 pm*confetti*
September 28th, 2010 at 11:29 pm68 –
September 28th, 2010 at 11:29 pmHinske’s is there too, just not under the editor’s pick thing.
Giants however are up 4-2 and on the verge of wrapping it up.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:30 pmMac:
“and host Georgia, who are even worse.”
Let us recall 2006, when a 6-4 Georgia team that had losses to Kentucky and Vanderbilt on the ledger, came to the Plains to meet a Top-5 Auburn team.
It…it wasn’t pretty: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recap?gid=200611110075&prov=ap
(Then again, that was about the time 2008 Matt Stafford got in his flying DeLorean and went back to 2006 to tell himself to stop screwing around, there was NFL Draft moolah on the line.)
September 28th, 2010 at 11:30 pmReally good job of nutting up by Dempster. Two on, nobody out and he struck out the side. Soriano again, also. God help me, I think I’m actually liking the Cubs.
Also, the Padres have a stuffed Yoda doll in their bullpen, so clearly that will help them at some point.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:34 pmJuan Uribe hit his 150th career home run tonight. I am old enough to remember when that was a lot of home runs for a shortstop. He’s not even that old, just 30.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:37 pmCashner gets the Padres 1-2-3 in the eighth, including clearing Eckstein, Tejada and Gonzalez. Marmol will have to face Ludwick, Stairs and Headley.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:39 pmso do we pull for SF to sweep the Pads?
September 28th, 2010 at 11:39 pmIt’s certainly starting to look that way, csg.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:41 pmHey, Tejada actually ate that one. Maybe he’s learning. Cubs have runners first and second, one out.
God, Aramis Ramirez has looked like a windmill tonight.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:46 pmYunel Escobar is with the Cubs now?
“so do we pull for SF to sweep the Pads?”
Of course. As long as they stay in first in the NL West, the Giants are completely irrelevant to the Braves. The Padres are the only team the Braves want to lose now.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:48 pmCome on Marmol let’s do it quick, I still have to watch Sons of Anarchy before I go to bed.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:50 pmOne out in ninth. Ludwick flies out to deep right-center.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:52 pmsome here hate him, but Id be more than happy to have Marlon Byrd in CF
September 28th, 2010 at 11:52 pmMarmol should be fined for wearing his pants like this. Does someone have to help him get in them?
Big loss for the Pads with Latos on the mound
September 28th, 2010 at 11:53 pmNot over yet, Marmol issues a 2 out walk on strike 3.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:56 pmMac, I’m old enough to remember when Juan Uribe played SS for the Giants, and it isn’t even the same guy.
September 28th, 2010 at 11:58 pmballgame, Braves up 1.5 games
September 29th, 2010 at 12:00 amCubs win!
EDIT: And now the Giants win.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:00 amIt’s over, Cubs win. Braves now a game up in the loss column.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:00 am1.5 game lead!
September 29th, 2010 at 12:00 amCubs Win\Giants Win
September 29th, 2010 at 12:01 amGeez, did anyone notice that woman’s reaction after Marmol struck out the final out?
September 29th, 2010 at 12:01 amCubs win, Diamondbacks lose, and you now have permission to watch your motorcycle gang.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:01 amCUBS WIN! There is yet hope for the season.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:01 am94 – no, what happened?
September 29th, 2010 at 12:01 amI must admit, if I were a Padres fan I would be pretty angry right now.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:02 am88- I remember him too; the current Uribe is Jose’s nephew. The older one used to be known as Jose Gonzalez, but asked to be called Uribe when traded to the Giants- the ultimate player to be named later. Died in a car crash a few years ago.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:03 amMarmol’s breaking ball has to be one of the five nastiest pitches in Major League Baseball. If he’s throwing it for strikes, you have absolutely no chance.
Bravo to the Cubs for this, really. They are playing hard. I might actually have to let a small portion of my hate for them go if we make the playoffs.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:05 amThe older one was Jose Uribe, actually.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:06 amTomorrow’s game thread will be up at noon CT, I believe, in case I don’t get around to announcing it. It’s… experimental.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:08 am@69
I’d say the Marlins announcers who insist on saying “His name is Dan Uggla!!!!!!” every time he hits a home run are also pretty large ass cracks.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:34 am@ 104
September 29th, 2010 at 7:16 amLots of horrible home team TV announcers. Radio is usually better bacause they have to describe the play and do not have to use inane comments they have prepared before game started
As I watched Heap rounding third base, I wondered to myself, “why hasn’t this guy had a day off? He looks absolutely gassed.” I was more upset at Bobby than Snitker.
September 29th, 2010 at 7:34 amdoes bobby sit him today vs Andrew Miller? Im guessing no, since there is an off day tomorrow
September 29th, 2010 at 8:09 amThere are four games left in the season with a lead under two games. No one sits.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:38 amHuddy’s reaction to Melky’s botched catch reminded me of a Manning Face
Also today’s game will be on ESPN for those outside Atlanta. Or more specifically “ESPN Wednesday Night Baseball presented by Captain Morgan Part of Lee Jeans Hunt For October”
September 29th, 2010 at 8:40 amFun fact: If the Braves win today, and both the Padres and Giants lose, the Braves clinch a tie for the Wild Card.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:44 amI look forward to this game thread.
A win today would go along ways
September 29th, 2010 at 8:44 amAnother fun fact: If the Phillies win, and the Giants lose, the Phillies clinch home field and have zero incentive to play any of their regular starters against the Braves.
September 29th, 2010 at 8:55 amsure would be nice if the last two games of the Phils series didnt mean anything and we could rest a few
September 29th, 2010 at 9:00 amputting up another W 3 hours before the other teams get started would be nice
September 29th, 2010 at 9:06 amOh, wait, my mistake. Phillies already clinched home field. They can rest everybody for the remainder of the season. Halladay’s pitched a lot of innings. He needs a break.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:08 amour arb notes from MLBTR
A hamstring injury cut into Jurrjens’ season, and that gets part of the blame for his worst season. The Scott Boras client still heads to arbitration with 37 wins and a 3.52 ERA, putting Jered Weaver’s $4.265MM reward in sight at the least. Prado is coming off his best year and owns a .307 career average, so he’ll top a million bucks. Relievers O’Flaherty and Moylan also figure to be tendered contracts.
Outfielders Cabrera and Diaz were unexpectedly bad this year. The Braves could save $6MM by non-tendering both, and that money could go toward a new left fielder.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:09 amOh, hey, Manuel announced last night that Halladay will not appear for the rest of the year.
That helps us.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:14 amMore fun facts: The Braves are guaranteed to win the wild card if they win 3 of their last 4, and certain to at least host a one-game playoff if they go 2-2.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:15 amI think Bobby will rest Mac today since it’s a day game and we are facing a lefty. What’s the point of having Ross if we don’t play him?
September 29th, 2010 at 9:23 am@117 Having the Giants and the Padres playing against each other for the last three games help us even more I think.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:24 am@120, yes. The Braves could, conceivably, clinch the Wild Card before the Phillies series even starts. That would be nice.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:30 ami propose to nickname craig kimbrel “filth”.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:35 am@116, hey maybe Jurrjens will be cheap enough to keep….
Honestly, he is going to be a fine pitcher going forward, and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings a bit to have him on the club at 5M next year.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:36 amI don’t want the Giants to make the playoffs. They scare me a lot more than either the Reds or Padres do.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:40 am@124, we are so doooomed in the playoffs, I really am not even thinking about the opposition. I’d just like for Bobby to get in one more time.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:43 amPoint of Order:
A proposal is already before the Committee to nickname Kimbrel “The Filthy”. I will support my esteemed colleague’s motion to amend however.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:43 amI second the motion.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:48 amI prefer “The Filthy,” actually.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:49 amStu, we’ll most likely be facing the Reds though right? I guess maybe that is still up in the air. I wouldnt mind SF throwing their rotation at the Phils in a 1st round matchup
and where are your Haiku’s
September 29th, 2010 at 9:57 amIf “The Situation” ends up starting a trend in nicknames (“The Filthy, The Melky”) it truly is a sign of the coming Apocalypse.
—————–
Uh, why haven’t Hinske and Conrad seen more action? This team needs a jolt of energy and both those guys provide that.
———–
Bethany – if AU has a choke game in them, please let it be in Lexington.
Also, Auburn fans need to go to that game. It’s a night game which means you’ll have time to go to Keeneland, one of the classiest – ok, Saratoga wins – thoroughbred tracks in North America. It’s a great day and the most fun you can have in Lexington with your stylish clothes on.
September 29th, 2010 at 9:57 amOnly if someone can draw a cartoon of Pig Pen on the mound hurling a ball through a cloud of filth. The man needs a logo.
Will also accept photoshop of the Sex Pistols wearing Anarchy in the CK t-shirts.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:00 amWe could also just call him Pigpen.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:04 amDamn… I like Pigpen even better.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:07 am@132
September 29th, 2010 at 10:07 amooooooo…me likey! i now beat to the drum of Pigpen!
130- The Folk Hero has those rules- you know, don’t put him in direct sunlight, get him wet, or play him before the seventh inning. The Hinske has also been very streaky and is a defensive liability. Now I’ll stop with The Nicknames before I get on The Nerves.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:08 am229—Martin’s being done for the year broke my spirit. And the Giants currently have a better record than the Reds, which means we’d play them if the season ended right now.
I like “Pigpen,” too.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:11 amI think we win the wild card, but the NLDS is not going to be pretty without Prado, Jurrjens, and Chipper.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:18 amso, i’m going to go ahead and assume that we’re going to make it to the postseason. here’s the 25-man i’d like to see.

minor, diory, and farnsworthless are the 3 players that dont make my cut. do you guys think this is what we’ll see? i’m guessing diory might be on the team to back up aag, but it seems rather pointless considering we have infante that can shift over there in a pinch.
Or Medlen… don’t forget how much that kid helped us.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:22 amBlasphemy time:
I truly love Bobby, but if he were not retiring, I’d be calling for it. It’s just time.
AND (other than McDowell) I’m not going to miss this coaching staff.
I truly think they should offer the job to CHipper. Probably crazy, but the idea continues to grow on me.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:24 amSI says:
“Atlanta LHP Eric O’Flaherty who last pitched on Wednesday, is not available. He said he has been suffering from lightheadedness, dizzy spells and blurred vision and is undergoing tests. It could be related to a spell of mononucleosis, which had him on the DL from July 10-Aug. 20.”

September 29th, 2010 at 10:30 amThey should offer Chipper the hitting coach job. Hell, even if he does come back next year, they should offer him the chance to be player/hitting coach, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t think he wants, nor is ready for, the manager job.
I will miss McDowell quite a bit. After all the hand-wringing over him, he’s turned into an excellent pitching coach. The best that can be said about him is that every time we have a pitcher with a minor mechanical flaw, it gets fixed. Moylan has looked so much better since whatever they did to him, it’s like night and day.
Is it common for people with mono to have relapses a month later?
September 29th, 2010 at 10:30 amWhere’s O’Flaherty, Ryan? Did I miss something about him being out?
EDIT: Nevermind
September 29th, 2010 at 10:30 am@140:
I dunno. I think I’d keep Eddie.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:31 amInfante – 4
September 29th, 2010 at 10:32 amHeyward – 9
Diaz – 7
Lee – 3
Gonzalez – 6
Ross – 2
Conrad – 5
Cabrera – 8
Lowe – 1
I guess it gets easier to make lineups when all our guys are out.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:34 amanyone see Eddie jumping up and down in the bullpen on the Hinske HR?
September 29th, 2010 at 10:35 amid go with

September 29th, 2010 at 10:47 am142—You will miss McDowell? Is he going somewhere? I assume the pitching coach job will still be his, if he wants it.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:56 amI made a gif of Huddy’s Melky reaction
First time making one of these. It was kind of a pain in the ass at first, but it was definitely worth the trouble.
September 29th, 2010 at 11:02 amThank you, I just bookmarked that gif!
September 29th, 2010 at 11:04 am#151 – that’s awesome
Looks like we will avoid both Roys this weekend and maybe see Hamels for just a few innings-
Phillies right-hander Kyle Kendrick will pitch Friday against the Braves at Turner Field, which has become a meaningless series for the Phils since they clinched their fourth consecutive NL East title Monday. The club has not announced starters for Saturday or Sunday, but manager Charlie Manuel said after Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the Nationals that Halladay will not pitch this weekend.
It is unclear how they will use Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt, if at all. Oswalt said Tuesday he does not expect to start this weekend. He said he expects to throw longer bullpen sessions to keep sharp for the playoffs.
If they pitch Hamels one more time, he likely will follow Oswalt’s program from Tuesday. Oswalt threw 66 pitches in five innings before leaving the game.
Manuel said the Phillies have informed Major League Baseball that they’re choosing to play an eight-day NLDS because it allows them the luxury of pitching only Halladay, Hamels and Oswalt on normal rest through the five-game series. Because the Phillies only need three starters, they might carry fewer pitchers in the first round.
The Phillies would like to give left-handers Antonio Bastardo and Mike Zagurski work this week to see if they can carry two lefties in the bullpen. Bastardo struck out the side in the eighth inning Tuesday.
They also suggested lefty Jamie Moyer, who has not pitched since July because of a left elbow injury, could be ready to pitch in the later rounds of the postseason. But Moyer just started throwing off a mound, and he only has thrown four-seam fastballs, which he does not throw in games. He is a ways away from returning.
September 29th, 2010 at 11:07 amglaus made one play at 3b and the throw started bouncing around the pitchers mound. i dont want to see him at 3b unless it’s absolutely necessary.
September 29th, 2010 at 11:09 amThanks John!
September 29th, 2010 at 11:10 amso this weekend we’ll likely see
Beachy v Kendrick
Hanson v Hamels (for a few innings)
Hudson v ? – not Joe Blanton since he pitches today, maybe Drew Carpenter? or maybe they’ll activate old-man Moyer to finish us off with 75mph fastballs. Hopefully Sunday doesn’t matter for us anyway
September 29th, 2010 at 11:25 amMy daughter is designing custom skate boards, especially Braves themes boards, perfect gifts for Braves fans, contact me if you might be interested!
September 29th, 2010 at 11:41 amPersonally, I’m hoping the Braves take care of business tonight and on Friday so we can rest Hanson and Hanson.
September 29th, 2010 at 11:56 am@157 What is your email? I could show off her work on Eephus League if she’d like.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:24 pmA game against the Hanley-free Marlins in an hour. Three games against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs this weekend. Go 3-1, and it doesn’t matter what the other teams do. Go 2-2, and the team will still probably be fine.
If, at the beginning of the season, you asked me if I’d be happy with this situation with four games left in the year, I would have said yes. Emphatically.
September 29th, 2010 at 2:21 pmThe Braves chances if each outcome is a coin flip, unless I messed up the math.
Right now, the Braves have an 80% chance of winning the WC outright, and a 15% chance of there being a WC tie involving the Braves.
If the Braves win, there’s a 91% chance of an outright WC and an 8% chance of a tie for the WC.
If the Braves lose, there’s a 69% chance of an outright WC and a 22% of a tie for the WC.
