I don’t care how bad Perry was (really bad) as a Brave, Fick was just a guy you wanted to punch in the nuts.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:31 amFick was a dick.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:43 amI remember a year when Gerald Perry and Dion James seemed to be the least bad hitters on the team. No wonder they lost so many games.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:53 amEither of those guys is better than every semi-regular outfielder the Braves used this year not named McLouth or Diaz.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:07 amthese are very poor candidates for worst brave. neither was that bad. gerald perry was serviceable and was actually one of the better players in a time when the braves were extremely bad. i’m sure there are more to choose from….
robert fick was a dick, but he wasnt a bad player.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:08 amI wonder if Steve Phillips gets fired if the chick he was messing around with was …. you know, um … not ugly.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:19 amperry and fick were both truly horrible players but perry, who as a 1stbaseman, made Kotchman look like Mark mcGuire, gets my vote because he was around a lot longer and did a lot more damage.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:26 amNow that Steve Phillips has been fired, next in line on the “Needing His Useless Ass Fired” list is surely Rogers Redding.
Vandy gets hosed.
MSU gets hosed in slow motion.
This bunch is borderline criminal.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:41 amRe: Fick
Aside from that A-Rod-like baserunning play vs the Cubs, why, again, was Fick so unliked?
Re: Perry
Never liked Ozzie Virgil or Ken Oberkfell or Andres Thomas or (fill in almost any pitcher’s name), but in our collection of bad players from the mid to late ’80s, Gerald Perry was actually a guy I kinda liked.
When your team is certifiably hopeless and you actually watch 100+ games per year—did that make me hopeless?—after cheering for Dale Murphy (who was easy to root for), you looked for little things you admire & Gerald Perry kinda filled that gap for me.
I always liked how Perry would pull off some daring things on the basepaths. He was kinda like Yunel, except that Perry’s stunts actually worked most of the time.
Just things like tagging up from third on a foul out to a 1B who had no arm, going first to third on a LF who didn’t charge the ball, stealing third in a tight game when you’re not sure we’ll ever get another hit.
I mean, that’s how bad we were. On an emotional level, it felt like Perry wasn’t going gently with the losses.
Back at my college newspaper, I wrote a column about the Braves & Gerald Perry—a real try-to-find-a-silver-lining kinda thing—and I started the column with a quote from an old indie rock band called the Minutemen: “Burned out wreck on the side of the beach… symbol for my life.”
I knew that Gerald Perry wasn’t really a winning ballplayer, but (after Dale Murphy) that’s what my fandom had been reduced to. Thank God that 1991 wasn’t too far off.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:03 pm@9: I’ll be honest–I didn’t like Fick because he was ugly as hell.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:04 pmI didnt like Fick after the forearm he threw into a 1B while running down the line. Bobby apparently didnt either because I dont remember him playing after that
October 26th, 2009 at 1:17 pmLOL sdp!
October 26th, 2009 at 1:19 pmFick’s Wiki page says he was actually a child actor.
You might’ve found Fick’s looks objectionable, but he was certainly no Otis Nixon, who kinda favored a gargoyle.
October 26th, 2009 at 1:27 pmFick did that in the playoffs — he didn’t play after that because the Braves were eliminated.
October 26th, 2009 at 1:32 pmFick was spectacularly terrible in those playoffs, helping lose two games with errors.
October 26th, 2009 at 1:35 pmNone of this excuses Gerald Perry of several years of playing first base and hitting like a second baseman.
October 26th, 2009 at 1:36 pmIn England, fick is sort of a low-speech perjorative for stupid…”that boy’s a bit fick, if you catch my meaning.”
October 26th, 2009 at 1:41 pmMark Sanchez eats a hot dog during a TV time out.
October 26th, 2009 at 1:44 pmIn the spirit of the Tennessee link posted yesterday…
October 26th, 2009 at 2:17 pm… also, this may be the cutest kid ever.
October 26th, 2009 at 2:18 pmFick’s about the only guy that made me ashamed to be a Braves fan. I’ll be voting for him thru many rounds.
October 26th, 2009 at 2:47 pm13 – Otis Nixon is the perfect likeness of Michael Jackson in the Thriller video.
October 26th, 2009 at 3:19 pmdidnt Otis Nixon try suing the Braves for continuing to replay his catch after he was no longer affiliated with the braves? I heard that somewhere before
October 26th, 2009 at 3:49 pmI wouldn’t think that to be true. Sounds a bit absurd…like suing McDonalds because their coffee is too hot.
October 26th, 2009 at 4:14 pmLane Kiffin is a sore loser who doesn’t know the rules. I’m sorry this post contains no new information.
October 26th, 2009 at 5:09 pmHahaha, GATORS WEAR JEAN SHORTS!
Priceless… so are national championships…
October 26th, 2009 at 5:26 pmI’m not sure what’s funnier, this guy’s rant or his orange “exercise suit”…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiC9T-y7hLI
Not nearly as repulsive as the Bama frat-boy meltdown from a couple months ago, but apparently no less genuine.
October 26th, 2009 at 5:55 pmSounds like Tourette’s Guy.
October 26th, 2009 at 6:59 pm@19 – my eyes! my eyes!
October 26th, 2009 at 7:05 pm@19 – my eyes! my eyes!
Yeah, I watched the Tennessee-Bama game too. Put me down for Bama 4, LSU 2 on Nov 7.
October 26th, 2009 at 8:35 pmPut me down for advocating the pursuit of Mike Cameron during the upcoming free agent frenzy. For several reasons.
1. I don’t think the Braves are in any financial position to sign a big name free agent outfielder such as Jason Bay or Matt Holliday. This could change if Atlanta somehow manages to unload Derek Lowe but it’s highly unlikely.
2. I’m a big proponent of trading for the Rangers Nelson Cruz. But again, there are rumors flying that Cruz should be the bait to acquire a veteran pitcher, lefty set up man and another right handed bat of which the Rangers are seeking. So, the rumor mill will have to first turn into reality. Until then it’s all just speculation.
3. Mike Cameron is a veteran right handed bat who plays great defense (three gold gloves) and is more than capable of playing all three outfield spots. He would be an upgrade over Garret Anderson for sure and allow for some flexibility to move Nate McLouth to right field or vice versa with Cameron.
4. Some negatives concerning Cameron. He strikes out too much (156 K’s) and wasn’t worth the 10 million he made in Milwaukee this year, and hit just .250 but slammed 24 HR’s with 70 RBI. His OPS was .795 with 60 extra base hits.
In my opinion Cameron would help overall but only if he is willing to take a substantial pay cut in the ballpark of 3-5 million, and only if it’s a one year contract. Cameron’s presence would give the Braves three quality veteran outfielders including McLouth and Diaz as I don’t think Ryan Church is gonna be retained. Ditto for Anderson.
October 27th, 2009 at 2:14 amHow can it be so hard to find a right-handed corner outfielder with some pop?
October 27th, 2009 at 7:33 amCoach, put me down as the guy who wants to stay far far away from Cruz. Everyone please pay attention to his splits away from Texas, also note, he’s going from arguably the best hitting coach to one that I’d like to see get replaced
October 27th, 2009 at 8:37 amThe Braves need a real power hitter. If they’re not going to get that, they might as well just go with the group they have. It’s not like you’re going to find a substantially better player on the FA market (unless it’s a Holliday or Bay or another real power hitter) and you’re just peeing on money if you acquire someone who doesn’t give you anything the players you’ve already got do.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:47 amI agree PW. I would up grade ACHE, but I wouldn’t over pay for anything unless it is a big time bat.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:58 amMike Cameron is 900 years old
October 27th, 2009 at 9:58 amActually Cameron is a year younger than Garret Anderson. But here is the way I look at it.
Less is more. If Nelson Cruz and Mike Cameron are added in addition to a full season from both LaRoche and McLouth, on average that’s roughly another 90 HR’s. And that’s a conservative estimate.
I can see the Braves combining to hit 200 HR’s as a team in addition to the outstanding pitching, and that is least a 90 win season in 2010.
By the way, they cranked 222 HR’s back in 2005 which was the last time they saw the playoffs.
Simply put: Pitching + Defense + longball = playoffs.
October 27th, 2009 at 10:16 amIOW, he’s the same age as Anderson was last year. This ain’t progress.
October 27th, 2009 at 10:17 amYes it is Mac.
I’m like a broken record. It’s pitching, defense, pitching, defense, pitching, defense, pitching, defense. Throw the ball, catch the ball. Both Cruz and Cameron are excellent defenders. That is an improvement.
October 27th, 2009 at 10:27 am32, finding a right handed power hitting corner outfielder isn’t difficult at all.
Does Mitch Jones, Randy Ruiz or Shelley Duncan tickle your funny bone? Of course they would all strike out 200 times in a full season while cranking 25-30 HR’s/ 70-80 RBI with a .220/.240 BA
I’ll add Dan Uggla to the list, he could play LF better than Garret Anderson, maybe or at least no worse than ACHE?
October 27th, 2009 at 10:36 amCameron isn’t what he used to be with the glove. Some team will over pay for him and I hope it isn’t us.
I wonder what it would take to get Paul Konerko
October 27th, 2009 at 10:53 am40,
I’m a Randy Ruiz fan, personally. Shelley Duncan sucks, though.
Anyway, the point is, if the Braves aren’t going to be able to acquire a real power-hitter, might as well just go with Diaz/McLouth/Church and wait on Schafer and Heyward to catch up, because it’s not going to be much of an upgrade and you’ll wind up spending $7 million for 0.3 marginal wins. That’s bad baseball economics.
October 27th, 2009 at 11:01 amPaul Konerko is due $12 million for the next two seasons and is a free agent after that. I would pay $12 million for 25-30 home runs in the middle of our order. It would give us a right handed bat on top of that.
I am not sure what it would cost us to get him. May barber seems to think KK, Schaffer, and a stud pitcher (maybe if Minor plays well in the AFL)
Just a thought.
October 27th, 2009 at 11:02 am41,
He’s a perfect fit, really, but he has a full NTC and the Chi-Sox need to add bats, not subtract them. They’re pretty set on contending in 2010, too.
EDIT:
43,
No, he’s only under control for 1 more year, 2010 (at $12 million).
Also, you can’t trade drafted players until they’ve been under your control for a full year.
October 27th, 2009 at 11:02 amAh, I read where his NTC was limited. You are right, they are looking to add bats. We would have to get a third team in on the deal.
I just don’t think we are going to resign LaRoche.
October 27th, 2009 at 11:09 amI just don’t think we are going to resign LaRoche.
It would be a mistake to not resign LaRoche simply because he wants a third year. Freddie Freeman is not Jason Heyward. Freeman is struggling in the Arizona Fall League on top of having a really rough adjustment to AA last year. It would be foolish to not fill 1B with a league average option just because you hope Freeman will put it together by 2012. If he does there are plenty of ways to move an inexpensive Adam LaRoche midseason that year.
On the other hand, it would be foolish to overpay LaRoche based on his sick second half in Atlanta. He’s always a second half player, but he only projects to be a league average offensive 1B – 271/.348/.485 per Bill James.
For the record, Jason Heyward projects to out hit LaRoche as a 20 year old. James’ numbers (h/t to PJ at CAC) suggest that if Heyward were the starting RF next year he’d hit identically to Yunel Escobar.
October 27th, 2009 at 12:33 pm@46,
Completely agreed. One of the reasons we supposedly picked up Mark Kotsay was so that our CF wouldn’t block Schafer the next year. No prospect is a sure thing.
October 27th, 2009 at 12:41 pmWhat Sam said about LaRoche (and Freeman).
We’re crazy if we don’t resign Adam.
Heyward we can probably count on. Freeman is more of a hope than a strategy.
October 27th, 2009 at 12:46 pmGreat to finally see Fick in one of these matchups. It is easy to vote for Fick, but, that said, Gerald Perry remains for me one of the bigger disappointments to come up from the farm…..
October 27th, 2009 at 12:50 pmClaudell is the biggest disappointment to ever wear a Braves uniform.
Forget who, but someone in the Braves hierarchy put it this way:
“He’ll break your heart every time.”
October 27th, 2009 at 2:03 pmYa know what, if Mike Slive wants to side with his corrupt and/or addle-brained officials, he can go down with that ship as far as I’m concerned.
Talk about landing in a plum position. The wave of treasure that was headed the SEC’s way couldn’t be stopped by even this idiot.
I, the Madame DeFarge of BravesJournal, am knitting, knitting …
October 27th, 2009 at 2:14 pmAt least you’ll have your season, hank. The conference’s lack of integrity is to the Cats’ benefit on the hardwood.
October 27th, 2009 at 2:18 pmThe only reasons I can think of for not signing Adam LaRoche:
1. Somebody else offers more than 3/$27.
October 27th, 2009 at 2:41 pm2. A better option presents itself in trade (Adrian Gonzalez, Derek Lee)
hankonly at 51,
Where else (sports related) except at Braves Journal would I see a reference to Madame DaFarge (and also expect most people to know who the hell she is).
PW at 44 and Smitty at 43,
Disgagree strongly on Konerko. His last year and 3 year averages show he is a 740 OPS player away from U. S. Cellular. Four years is enough to convince me. The $12 million would be better spent on lots of people than that (8 ought to get you a year of Nick Johnson unless somebody offers him 12 for 2, without having to trade talent too).
In looking at the “right handed bats” I also noticed that Holliday has a reverse split. He is about 100 OPS points better against righties than lefties (also last year and 3 year average). The total at bats against lefthanders should be statistically significant (or, at least it is to me).
October 27th, 2009 at 2:45 pmHeyward’s AFL campaign is done.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:00 pmHeyward is done in AFL according to Bowman (on twitter, can’t get the link to his blog to work)… something with that Hammy.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:01 pm@51
Amen. More coaches need to call these guys out. SEC officiating has been poor this year
October 27th, 2009 at 3:01 pmI admit, I had to look up Madame Defarge. Granted, I’ve never read Tale of Two Cities all the way through, we only had to read a little bit in one of my English classes in high school. Oh, and I’m at Georgia Tech, a place where they don’t give a rat’s ass about literature, so yea.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:01 pmIt’s a far, far better thing we do to pick up some right-handed power.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:06 pmChipper was somewhere around Citi Field on the edge of the playoffs when the HGH began to take hold?
October 27th, 2009 at 3:11 pmBats! Bats!
October 27th, 2009 at 3:21 pmReading this will make you smarter.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:37 pmI read the little yellow book version of A Tale of Two Cities. Yeah me and Cliff were good friends back in high school. I too had to look up Madame DeFarge. But I get a break cuz high school was over 4 decades ago for me.
If I only had a nickle for every Dan Uggla reference by Coach.
Personally I’d rather keep our pitching intact rather than trade a guy (yeah even Lowe) for some guy that looks good to us becuase he hit over 20 homers.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:41 pmI saw the movie.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:43 pmWhat, this movie?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:22 pmUbubba, stay away from these bats.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:38 pmAre Jason Heyward’s continuing leg injuries cause for concern?
Dan Uggla would make for a pretty good DH but I really cringe to think of him in a Braves uniform.
63, A Dickens reference in the blog? Anybody read Edgar Allen Poe’s ” The facts in the case of M. Valdemar” It’s one of his classic Gothic short horror stories and one of the creepiest tales I have ever read. I had nightmares as an adolescent after reading some of his literature.
But Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was and still is my favorite classic writer. Sherlock Holmes fired the imagination of my youth as there was no internet or cable TV and plenty of time for some heavy reading along with Jules Verne, Louis L’Amoure, Stephen Crane and many more.

@67
“Dan Uggla would make for a pretty good DH but I really cringe to think of him in a Braves uniform.”
you are a typing contradiction….
you preach defense…then you say “uggla is the answer to the power, obviously not remembering youre “defense, pitching” rants, and now you contradict yourself again…
when does it end? start making sense.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:40 pmTo the male population of BravesJournal–I’ll be as vague as possible:
I had a “situation” today in which the “goods” failed to become properly “equipped” for a certain action and now I’m worried for my “health.” Is this a normal occasional occurrence?
October 27th, 2009 at 6:21 pmYou’ve been looking at the pictures of Steve Phillips’ mistress too much.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:23 pmsdp,
That was very vague. You’ll be fine, or maybe not.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:34 pmJust nerves. They have pills for that.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:38 pmsdp, they have doctors in this world to give you the advice that you need
#72 – there is no chance it would ever work again
October 27th, 2009 at 6:40 pmGator fans are turning on Tebow

LOL!

October 27th, 2009 at 6:41 pm@77
October 27th, 2009 at 7:27 pmHow about I just keep my money? Isn’t this the either/or fallacy that I occasionally read about?
71 – thinking too much remember only enough blood to operate one organ at a time.
October 27th, 2009 at 7:29 pmAny Gator fan that turns on Tim Tebow is, in my opinion, no Gator fan.
But I just read the article, and I don’t think he was turning on Tebow. I think he just really eloquently organized the frustrations Gator fans have with this team. Whether it’s Tebow’s poor throwing mechanics, the lack of wide receiver depth, Addazio’s lack of creativity, or the ineptitude of the offensive line, Gator fans have to be frustrated with what is going on with the offense. After the past couple weeks, there is no way we beat Alabama with the offense we’ve been putting together.
That guy pretty much said what I’ve been thinking since the LSU game, and if those things aren’t fixed, we aren’t going to win a national championship. Freaking Alabama will…
October 27th, 2009 at 8:07 pmThat blog was creepy. 7-0, #1 BCS, and the word “blame” is coming out? Why don’t you wait until they actually, you know, lose to Alabama, or anyone for that matter, first. That guy will be writing a post called “Gators are National Champions: Heads must roll!” at this rate.
October 27th, 2009 at 8:22 pmAs strange as it sounds, I think this weekend may be the most important one of the year for Alabama. Since they have a bye week, they can either get their offensive timing and play calling under control or continue down the same path they’ve been on for the last 3 weeks,
October 27th, 2009 at 8:24 pmthat goal line stand by LSU against MSU is getting bigger as the season progresses
October 27th, 2009 at 8:31 pmWow. I came home and got the mission accomplished alone, but that class is going to be hellaciously awkward for the rest of the semester. I offered to help her with some material for an exam, we somehow ended up at her apartment, and then THAT (which was NOTHING!) happened. Save me God.
October 27th, 2009 at 8:42 pmsdp, if this was an attractive girl, and you’re a young guy (as it sounds), and you couldn’t rise to the challenge, I’d be worried, dude. Now, if it was an uggo, and your peep was on the frits, I get it. Buuttt… doesn’t sound like that.
October 27th, 2009 at 8:55 pmsdp, way too much info there
October 27th, 2009 at 8:56 pm70, I never said Dan Uggla was the answer to anything, don’t go putting words in my mouth. And the DH is in what LEAGUE????
Figure it out already!!!!!!
October 27th, 2009 at 8:56 pm@81
Let’s be honest here. I know ububba hates the word “resume” in regardless of college football, but Florida’s sucks right now. They beat LSU in Death Valley, which was big, but they’ve struggled against a mediocre Tennessee team at home, and down-right crappy Arkansas and MSU. Aside from Kentucky (which seems like forever ago now), they haven’t had a convincing win against an SEC team. If Florida had not won the national championship, they probably wouldn’t be #1 right now. And if they faced a good team with an offense (something Tennessee and LSU do not have), I’m not quite sure we’d be undefeated. I’ll stop short of saying we’re winning with smoke and mirrors, but I don’t know how we’re getting it done right now.
October 27th, 2009 at 8:58 pmmac,
October 27th, 2009 at 9:04 pmis there any way you can find coach’s post concerning dan uggla?
Ryan, Coach said he would be a good DH but not a good fit for the Braves.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:12 pmOctober 27th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
thanks mac.
pitching and defense….look no further than putting dan uggla in left field. freakin’ hilarious. coach, as i said, you say so much shit that you dont even know what you say. is that enough evidence?
i know you’ll conveniently disappear for a while so you dont have to ‘fess up to your ridiculousness.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:31 pmPepperidge Blogs Remembers.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:44 pm86—I second that. Way too much info in many of his posts, actually.
October 27th, 2009 at 10:31 pmRob,
The notion of “resume” is actually fine. But the fact that it helps determine who’s in a title game strikes me as goofy.
This team isn’t as good as last year’s—that seems obvious—but just win the games & see where it gets you.
Hopefully, we’ll drop some Halloween “hondenpoep” (a certain kind of Dutch litter) on that Yellow Brick Road.
October 27th, 2009 at 10:54 pmSee this is what I get for actually speaking my mind. Childish second guessing. I feel sorry for idiot(I won’t mention his name) with no balls who loves to play devils advocate but isn’t man enough to come up with an original idea.
Keep trying sonny (92) boy, you can’t keep up, my dick is longer than yours.

Here’s my vote:
He’s out of his freaking gourd. Can I get an aye or nay!
October 28th, 2009 at 12:54 amOK, one more cheap shot at the kid and I’ll call it a night.
I totally agree with Ryan C, we need this retard on our Braves team in 2010:

October 28th, 2009 at 2:50 amis there a ban coming soon? i hope so.
so, i post some quite insane ideas about how to get rid of lowe (which it will have to be insane to actually get someone to take on his salary) and now i’m the bad guy? yet, you cant stick to a single, solitary argument without fully contradicting your own points. i give up.
btw, @100, i’m the one who gave you props for that…
the tongues of some folks on bravesjournal have become quite loose lately.
October 28th, 2009 at 7:11 am100—Wait, your actual name is “Coach (Ever-changing Parenthetical Nonsense)”? That would help to explain some of the crazy.
October 28th, 2009 at 8:02 am@84 – dude. Really. Spill your guts on Facebook already.
Ryan C. arguing with Coach whatever his name is in the hopes of ‘winning’ an argument is the true definition of insanity.
October 28th, 2009 at 8:08 amCoach- It’s some guy on a blog, whom you’ll probably never meet in your life. Do you honestly care that much about what he thinks of you? I really like some of your ideas, and you’re fun to have around, but stop talking stuff so personally. People disagree with you. Get over it, and stop trying to attack their way of thinking- isn’t the same thing that they’re doing to you, which is pissing you off?
October 28th, 2009 at 8:20 amHey Mac, Ryan wants his diaper changed.
Are we having fun yet!!!!!!! Yes we are!
