Braves 4, Nats 1
Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals – Box Score – September 25, 2009 – ESPN
Javier Vazquez is really good. He allowed one run on three hits — an eighth-inning solo homer — in pitching another complete game. He struck out seven and walked only one. He’s not going to get any, but it would be nice if he got some Cy Young mentions.
The Braves got two “unearned” runs in the first, thanks to PTG Orr, playing second for the Nats. After the first two went down, Chipper singled, and McCann walked. Orr let a grounder go through his legs, scoring Chipper. ACHE then singled to bring in McCann and make it 2-0.
It stayed that way for a long time. It’s not easy to pitch under those circumstances — one runner brings the tying run to the plate — but Vazquez thrived. Finally, Yunel led off the eighth with a single then went to second on an error. After a groundout, he scored an “unearned” run on Diaz’s single to make it 3-0. The Nats got the run back on the homer in the bottom of the inning, but Prado homered in response to make it 4-1. Bobby didn’t go to the pen, letting Vazquez finish it out. One thing about riding the pen so hard is that the rotation is still relatively fresh.
The Braves had nine hits and left ten men on base. That could have backfired, but…

Sadly, Miller and McClellan couldn’t hold the Rox down. Rockies 2, Cards 1. Still 3 1/2 out.
September 25th, 2009 at 9:50 pmI fixed it. You know, the 2 is right next to the 1? Isn’t that weird?
September 25th, 2009 at 9:58 pmI think I read somewhere that Cy Young voters can only submit their top 3 choices. Anyone know if that’s true and if so, how many are submitted on a MVP ballot? Just curious.
September 25th, 2009 at 9:59 pmYes, it’s true- the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year voters only make three choices (5 points for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd).
The BBWAA MVP award voters make 10 choices (Points are 14-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1).
September 25th, 2009 at 10:10 pmSuggest “Keep hope dead” as new blog subtitle.
September 25th, 2009 at 10:48 pmCubs win. So we got everything we wanted this evening except that the Rockies won. Which is kind of like, “Other than that, how was Dallas?”
September 25th, 2009 at 11:16 pm#5 – I like it. Norton’s only had 7 PAs this month – obviously still seven too many – might be time for something else.
Is it too late to apply for admission to the AL Central? Or to lobby the league office for a 175 game season?
September 25th, 2009 at 11:19 pmWren needs to forget about Hudson and sign Vasquez to 2 year extension.
September 26th, 2009 at 5:48 amIf the Broadway tour of Avenue Q comes near any of you, you should go see it. I saw it last night here in Clemson. Hilariously vulgar but an incredible production. The place was howling with laughter.
September 26th, 2009 at 7:47 amWren needs to somehow find a way to keep Huddy, Vasquez, JJ, and Hanson for a very long time
September 26th, 2009 at 8:38 amVazquez is another example of the AL to NL boost. And boy am I glad he’s The Example this year. Keep it up Javy!
Oh, yeah…No Hope here. Nope, none, nada, etc etc.
September 26th, 2009 at 8:52 amif it allows us to keep hudson and vazquez, i’m all in for trading lowe to the cubs for bradley. we’ve tamed jerks before. maybe lowe and kj for milton and a solid relief man.
September 26th, 2009 at 9:06 am9, I think I know the girl who played the main love interest if she’s still touring. Glad you liked the show, it’s definitely fun.

Nice column about it by the AJC’s Jeff Schultz, who went to high school with Steve Wynn.

Thank goodness for the DVR. I have to attend an Irish wedding today/tonight. Will probably be more of a challenge to the ol’ system than running a marathon.
Go Braves/Go Dawgs.
September 26th, 2009 at 11:30 amPete Orr, starting third baseman. That pretty much sums up the 2009 Nationals.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:08 pmOne game playoff would have Vazquez vs Cook. That’d be a good game to see.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:14 pmThanks, Yunel! It would have really pissed me off if we’d wasted that opportunity.
Anyone else here?
September 26th, 2009 at 12:15 pmSeriously, why is ACHE batting 5th?
September 26th, 2009 at 12:15 pmThat was beyond funny.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:17 pmWait, the game is on now? The schedule said it was a night game. Oh, well.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:17 pmOrr for series MVP.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:18 pmSure, Riggleman. Intentionally walk a guy to get to a .322 hitter. That makes perfect sense.
And Pete Orr is still being helpful!
September 26th, 2009 at 12:19 pmEveryone saw the Pete Orr Throw Fail, right? Or did I imagine that?
September 26th, 2009 at 12:19 pmThat was very comical. Why is Pete Orr in the majors?
September 26th, 2009 at 12:21 pmFour in the first should break their spirit, assuming they have any spirit…
September 26th, 2009 at 12:22 pmSo that’s what Alberto Gonzales is up to nowadays.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:23 pmACHE sucks.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:34 pmI’m embarrassed for the Nationals.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:34 pmI can’t get the game for some reason. Anyone else having trouble?
September 26th, 2009 at 12:34 pmI’m on MLB.TV, Rob. Not sure if you are local. It’s a Fox Sports South feed.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:37 pmI’ve got it on Sports South, Rob. No problems here.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:37 pmYou know, the Nats aren’t very good.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:42 pmThree errors in 2.1 innings for the Gnats. Impressive in its way.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:47 pmDark clouds over Joe Simpson’s 100-loss teams? Yeah, one big dark cloud was his sub-Frenchy OPS.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:49 pmTebow questionable with an illness today for Kentucky.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:50 pm@ 35 – Can’t he just heal himself?
September 26th, 2009 at 12:55 pmGood lord. Scott Blair is cursed against North Carolina or something. Just shanked a 27-yard FG.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:07 pmHuzzah. Anderson isn’t totally useless.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:08 pmLot of rain in Tuscaloosa.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:09 pmIt seems to be raining everywhere. Could be an interesting day of football.
I just hope they get this game in against the Nats.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:11 pmThe game isn’t on my Extra Innings package for some reason. Oh well, the Bravos seem to be doing their job today.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:24 pmIt would be nice if the cardinals actually won a game here
September 26th, 2009 at 1:25 pmIf the Bobcats beat the Vols tonight, beers on me. All around.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:27 pmDammit.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:30 pmHe got all of that one.
He was traded for Ryan Langerhans? I can’t believe a team gave up anything for Langerhans.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:31 pmAt least now it’s official.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:33 pmNot Hanson’s best game, but good enough. Now the bullpen needs to preserve the lead.
September 26th, 2009 at 1:58 pmHe only really had 1 bad inning.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:01 pmHere comes Zimmerman this could be bad.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:13 pm-exhale-
September 26th, 2009 at 2:16 pmHanson only allowed five baserunners. It’s just that four of them scored. That won’t happen too often.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:16 pmMike Gonzalez did a fine job, as well as being a smart dressed man (if you’ve seen the “Rookie Hazing 2009″ thread on Talking Chop).
September 26th, 2009 at 2:17 pmMcCann is still the Man.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:31 pmRuck the Fockies!
September 26th, 2009 at 2:32 pmWhat horrible coaching by Dan Mullen, what a loser.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:46 pm3 straight infield singles
September 26th, 2009 at 2:47 pmThis seems a bit much, asking Soriano to come in for one out when we’re still up by six.
Edit: But at least it worked. Go Cards!
September 26th, 2009 at 2:51 pmSoriano coming in. With a six run lead.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:51 pmEven I knew to run a HB sweep there Mullen, you idiot.
September 26th, 2009 at 2:52 pmSoriano hadn’t pitched in a few days
September 26th, 2009 at 2:56 pmSoriano is now at 94 strikeouts and needs only 6 more to notch the first Braves reliever 100-strikeout season in 10 years. Who did it last? John Rocker in 1999 with 104 K’s.
September 26th, 2009 at 3:02 pmRecapped.
