Joke of a game thread: May 31, Braves at D-Backs
Time for a contest. I’m looking for a joke. The beginning of this joke must be:
“What’s the difference between Jeff Francoeur and ________?” The blank may be filled by a person, place, thing, concept — whatever.
The winner will receive absolutely nothing of any value. Which lends itself to a Jeffy joke, doesn’t it?

what does jeff francoeur and a black hole have in common? they both suck severely.
May 31st, 2009 at 11:36 amWhat’s the difference between Jeff Francoeur and a Delorean being used as time machine?
Nothing – they both have imaginary power numbers.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:02 pmCould always roll out the old “What’s the difference between Jeff Francoeur and Oscar Wilde? One was a shining wit, and the other a …”
Or the convoluted, “What’s the difference between Jeff Francoeur and Le Chiffre (Bond villain in Casino Royale)? When Le Chiffre swings at balls, he hits.”
May 31st, 2009 at 12:16 pm…and an asteroid. Asteroids hit once every few million years.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:19 pmAs a James Bond fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Nick’s last one.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:25 pmBetween Jeff and a Major League baseball player.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:25 pmRyan Langerhans. Ryan Langerhans occasionally played at replacement level.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:53 pmAnswer could also be we got rid of Langerhans when we should’ve.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:55 pmWhat’s the difference between Jeff and Gadfly? At this point, even Jeff is willing to admit he sucks.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:57 pmIs Jeff Francoeur among the worst baseball players ever to appear on the cover of SI? What’s the list of worst SI cover boys (and girls) of all time?
May 31st, 2009 at 12:57 pmWhat’s the difference between Jeff Francoeur and Budweiser? One is all-American, bland, ubiquitous, annoying, impossible to avoid in commercials, and soul-crushingly bad, and the other plays right field for the Braves.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:59 pmWhat’s the difference between Jeff Francoeur and Catie McCoy Francoeur?
Nothing, they both make their living taking fastballs and sliders down the middle.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:00 pmYou guys think there will be any changes when they get back to Atlanta tomorrow? What if they lose today?
May 31st, 2009 at 1:00 pmCould go with the old standby-
Whats the difference between Jeff and a bucket of crap? The bucket.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:10 pmWhat’s the difference between Jeff Francoeur and his mother?
Jeff never compared himself to Socrates.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:18 pmDamn, Dix. Burn.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:24 pmWhat’s the difference between Jeff Francouer and herpes?
Both ruin your life, but herpes take a week off here and there.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:26 pmand Matt Diaz?
If you can’t answer this, you must be Bobby Cox.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:40 pma bad dream?
When you wake up, the bad dream is over.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:42 pmDiaz is in RF today
May 31st, 2009 at 1:42 pmcsg,
If you are making this up, that is cruel.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:43 pmAlex, Budweiser plays right field for the Braves? And cliff, according to DOB, csg is right.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:46 pmnope fox sports has the lineup
KJ
May 31st, 2009 at 1:51 pmEsco
Chipper
Mac
Ganderson
Kotch
Diaz
Schafer
P
I will boldly speculate that they don’t want him to get hurt while Wren’s putting the finishing touches on a trade. That must be what’s going on.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:57 pmwe can only hope.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:58 pmBobby will just call it a “scheduled off-day.”
May 31st, 2009 at 1:58 pmThis is basically Medlen’s last start, isn’t it?
May 31st, 2009 at 2:01 pmIs this old news? I’ve never heard this Francoeur story (from Nick Cafardo in today’s Boston Globe): “One thing that makes sense about Boston scouting the struggling Francoeur is that he’s a big Red Sox fan (he used to carry a Red Sox Mastercard until his Braves teammates made him get rid of it).”
May 31st, 2009 at 2:20 pmWhat’s the difference between Jeff Francoeur ánd herpes?
Nothing. Neither goes away.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:43 pmSorry #17, didn’t see your post.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:45 pmbest lineup of the year.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:58 pmwhat’s the difference in a lineup with francoeur and a lineup without francoeur?
A win.
Jeez, Yunel, you’re supposed to hit to the opposite field so the runner can get to third! Bobby better tell him to bunt next time.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:11 pmthe team can smell a victory when flailcoeur is sitting.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:17 pmWay to hustle, Garret.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:18 pmmedlen needed that. i can foresee a good outing from medlen today. he needs to work on his “throw away” pitches. they arent even close.
medlen is getting squeezed.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:28 pmthe team should take some notes from matt diaz. he hustles.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:31 pmYikes. That’s just creepy.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:35 pmFound an audio stream here:
http://www.broadcastradiostream.com/WFIS.asx
May 31st, 2009 at 3:37 pmi dont use it (unless there are blackout days like yesterday) because i have mlbtv, but here is a place that streams all the games. you have to download “tvants” to get it to work. i’m sure it’s highly illegal. use at your own risk.

May 31st, 2009 at 3:46 pmDid I just hear correctly that Young has an obp of something like .219? They makes the Braves OF look Ruthian.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:50 pmYoung is the only sub-Francoeurian outfielder in the major leagues.
About that 2001 D-Backs team… Their backups included Lyle Overbay, Rod Barajas, and Jack Cust, so it wasn’t like they didn’t have any good young players, it’s just that they wouldn’t use them.
Gone.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:53 pmChippaaaaaah
May 31st, 2009 at 3:53 pmGuess the Braves found some XBH today.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:55 pmEveryone is getting into the act in today’s Frenchy-less lineup.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:57 pmok, how long is this interview going to go on!?
May 31st, 2009 at 4:00 pmJoe “loves” Schafer hitting a foul ball down the left field line. I can’t imagine what he’d do if Jordan hit one into the third base dugout.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:02 pmThe Diamondback announcers don’t watch the game.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:02 pmThat last AB by Diaz produced a ball that was probably hit harder than any Frenchy has hit all year. Too bad it was an out.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:06 pmI liked that last inning from Medlin! Although, he looks like a 15 year old in that uni. It looks two sizes too big for him!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:10 pmPersonally, I agree with Joe. I’d like to see Shafer put some of those ‘show-me’ outside pitches in play. His swing does look awfully pull happy, and they do keep jamming him inside to get him out.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:11 pmi hope this is not medlen’s last outing. he is looking on track. let’s hope he doesnt have his breakdown inning like his last 2 outings.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:11 pm“Handling yourself and handling Scherzer are two different things”, are these guys listening to themselves!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:13 pmthey’re not pitching to mccann today.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:20 pmAbout time, ACHE.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:21 pmGAnderson’s homer … just under the wire before June. Puts him on a torrid 3-HR pace.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:21 pmACHE! HOLY SHIT!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:22 pmHoly crap, Anderson…?
May 31st, 2009 at 4:22 pmBallgame?
May 31st, 2009 at 4:22 pm911–come quickly–there’s a braves fan in cardiac arrest
cheap shit there from Scherzer
edit–Mac, don’t expect payback.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:22 pmThe apocalypse is upon us. Run, ACHE hit a ball out!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:22 pmI mean it — somebody better go down in the bottom of the inning.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:24 pmwell, maybe we get to see barbaro.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:24 pmWould it be asking too much to just roll this lineup out for a while, and you know, see what happens ?
I am almost more surprised that ACHE showed some emotion, than the fact he actually hit a home run.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:24 pmWell looks like Kotch will be out…
May 31st, 2009 at 4:28 pmIf you’re going to drill someone because you’re made about a homerun, you don’t usually go with the slider…. Or to the ankle, for that matter.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:28 pmHow did Prado not score from second on a ground ball single to right (per game day) with 2 out?
May 31st, 2009 at 4:29 pmi have been a supporter for schafer since day one, but he just looks overmatched.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:30 pmLast game of the year against the snakes. Somebody better have some sore ribs.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:30 pmI like Schafer. i still think he has potential. But he needs to go down and hit in Gwinnett.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:31 pm#66, it was hit pretty hard to right, and I don’t think Prado is especially quick.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:32 pmActually, get Drew, then knock Byrnes down in the next inning. He always deserves it.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:34 pmJust curious…if Kotch is out, besides Prado, who else plays 1st?
May 31st, 2009 at 4:35 pmFeast or famine for these guys, I tell you.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:36 pm@72,
Norton. Beyond that?
May 31st, 2009 at 4:37 pmNorton or Diaz.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:37 pm72 — Norton and Diaz can also play first.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:37 pmDOUBLES MACHINE!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:38 pmwell, good kelly is back.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:38 pmGlad you’ve joined us, KJ.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:39 pmDOUBLES MACHINE 2!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:39 pmI don’t understand how Kelly Johnson is not a .300 hitter like Chipper and Yunel. No explanation.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:39 pmBecause the cold streaks drag him down so much. If Johnson could just be slightly below average during them, instead of totally hopeless, he’d be a .300 hitter.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:44 pmGood point, Dan. His cold streaks are Andruw-like
May 31st, 2009 at 4:45 pmMedlen’s control is Madduxian today.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:50 pmmedlen has a ton of movement on his pitches today.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:51 pmNice you of to not run to 1st, ACHE.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:55 pmMedlen will probably get one more start with Glavine not on rotation to pitch until next Sunday.
What’s it going to take for Bobby to give Norton some time in the OF corners?
May 31st, 2009 at 5:12 pmACHE hit a home run? They had the game playing in the casino but I must have missed that. I did see him lollygag on a few plays.
May 31st, 2009 at 5:37 pmNice Prado by the pitcher not hustling to first — Martin Prado got an infield single on a play where the 1B robbed him of a double but the pitcher lollygagged to first.
May 31st, 2009 at 5:41 pmhanson through 5 innings: 0 runs, 2 hits, 7ks. ridiculous.
May 31st, 2009 at 5:46 pmI’m beginning to think he’s a pretty good pitcher.
May 31st, 2009 at 5:51 pmSo much for Diaz having no arm. Too bad McCann can’t hold on the ball when tagging.
For a guy who throws so hard, Acosta sure doesn’t get any Ks.
May 31st, 2009 at 5:51 pmjust glanced at the game log. the internet must be broken because it said something about ACHE hitting a home run. i’ve been hacked right?
May 31st, 2009 at 5:52 pmAnd Diaz in RF? Ok now I know something is wrong. If its true has his arm cost us the game yet?
May 31st, 2009 at 5:53 pmwell, so much for hanson. he lost the lead in the 6th.
May 31st, 2009 at 5:56 pm94 – We have a pool on whether Diaz will get injured before his right arm costs us the game. So far everybody but one has taken the “under”
May 31st, 2009 at 5:56 pmI want to see what Gadfly comes back with after this game. Diaz just showed that he can handle right field with no problem. But more importantly, he can hit the ball with some authority (something Frenchy couldn’t do in his dreams).
May 31st, 2009 at 5:59 pmThe last time I remember a bench player hitting instead of an available position player on this team was back in July 2007 when Moylan hit in a blowout game with Saltalamacchia still on the bench. ‘Salty’ was traded within a day or two I recall.
Here we got Kawakami instead of Francoeur and an off-day tomorrow….
May 31st, 2009 at 6:00 pmI was thinking the same thing! Maybe jeffy is gone!
May 31st, 2009 at 6:01 pmWell, Moylan hit instead of McCann in a game earlier this year because Bobby moronically wanted to save him for extra innings against the Mets instead of getting insurance in regulation.
May 31st, 2009 at 6:04 pmSchafer down to .204.
May 31st, 2009 at 6:10 pmRecap is up.
May 31st, 2009 at 6:17 pmWell above the Mendoza line.
His OBP is not quite as bad though.
May 31st, 2009 at 6:17 pm
