So, the Phillies won nine of nine games in Atlanta this season. That’s not good. I’d be more upset, of course, if I hadn’t given up two months ago.
The Phillies scored two runs in the first inning. The Braves got one back in the bottom of the first on a double by McCann. They tied it in the second when Kotchman actually hit a homer, his first as a Brave. I don’t care how depressed he is, he needs to hit more of those.
At any event, it stayed that way until the sixth, when Hampton gave up a two-run homer to Burrell to take the loss. The Braves got one run back on an error, but never really threatened to tie it up in the last two innings.
Chipper was 1-3 with two walks. Pujols was also 0-3 and Chipper remains 11 points up in the batting race; he’s ten points up in OBP.
Thank you for the Chipper updates Mac, those are what I’m actually CARING about right now.
Edit: Ohhh, I like that Smoltz is going to be doing some post season broadcast work… I hope he gets the Dodgers series (and I hope I get to watch that).

It’s not totally untrue, but if Bobby was at Pearl Harbor, he would be talking about how those American gunners did a great job firing their guns even though they didn’t shoot down any planes. Enough already. You can tolerate this with a winning team but not with a crap team like this. Especially when you have Corky Miller on the roster.

Will Rivera really be a Type B? I didn’t think he would.
As for the traded guys, it certainly damages the farm system’s depth, but we’d keep most or all of the truly elite prospects. As for Hernandez, I hope we trade him this offseason. Unless (a) Schafer bombs, and (b) Hernandez doesn’t, he’s never going to be our CF (and he doesn’t appear to have much value as a LF). His prospect status is very good right now, and I think he’d really us bring in some much needed pitching or corner OF help in a trade.
Everyone (including me) said the Teix trade was going to destroy the farm system, too, and it was stronger a year later than it was before the deal. I think you might be overstating your point a bit.
As for not being a winning team, is it because you don’t think there’s enough pitching? The fantasy offense I threw out there should be better than this year’s. That’s substantial improvement in the corner OF spots. As for the pitching, I think it’s good enough to compete if you catch a few breaks instead of having everything go wrong like we did this year. I know many hate the build-the-team-so-that-it’s-just-good-enough-to-compete-in-the-weak-NL approach, but as I said before, if you’re not giving up Schafer/Heyward/Hanson(/Freeman/Flowers) and these commitments only last 2-3 years, you’re not crippling any future runs by making these moves.

(This is not intended as criticism of Cox’s past style. Quite the contrary: there’s no reason to run players down for doing their best, as long as you understand that there are problems that need to be fixed.)

I say probably because I think Jeffy still has potential to be pretty good (the saying of which around here is tantamount to shouting Praise Allah during a Papal prayer I know)… but I don’t think it’ll happen here.
Edit: (though honestly, did we know he would be back? or did we think he was gone… an OPS .740 Jeffy would’ve brought much less ire upon himself than OPS .645 Jeffy has)
