I just read the article on AJC about the Braves no longer being available on national TBS. I realize this may be old news to many, but I had not realized the change. Just wanted to say that as a former ATL resident who now lives in VA, I’ll miss the end of this era. True, it probably ended when they stopped using Skip, Pete and Don Sutton for the regular broadcasts. But still it feels like part of my childhood has been officially stored away in the closet, never to be unearthed again. I know I can go see the Braves play the Nats, or see them on a national broadcast every now and again, but it’s not the same. So God bless you Bob Horner and Dale Murphy, Claudell Washington and Otis Nixon, I salute you and TBS for all you’ve meant to me and my sporting life.
September 30th, 2007 at 8:30 am“Season over at last game thread”
For all the complaning a lot of us (including me) did over this past season, I’m sure probably everyone here is going to miss the Braves over a very long offseason.
September 30th, 2007 at 8:52 amGoodbye TBS – a truely sad day in Braves history. Here’s hoping Larry can come away with the NL hitting crown for his first Black Ink point. On a good note, I have two favorite teams above the Braves – FSU and the Miami Dolphins. Last night’s win over the Saban-coached Tide was twice as sweet.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:05 amLast day of Woodward. Nice!
September 30th, 2007 at 10:01 amLast day of Woodward. Nice!
What if they bring him back? It’s not entirely impossible.
September 30th, 2007 at 10:11 amThen we’ll know who will be in the “delenda est” on opening day.
September 30th, 2007 at 10:37 amYeah.
“Hope.”
September 30th, 2007 at 10:47 amAAR with the zing!
September 30th, 2007 at 11:18 am“It’s not entirely impossible.”
Holy double negatives, Batman!
I just want to say thanks to the Bravesjournal regulars for keeping the season entertaining and to Mac for providing a civil and intelligent forum.
ububba, we’ll have to catch another game next year.
September 30th, 2007 at 11:23 amChris Woodward has surpassed a long line of worthless players and should be officially crowned the worst Atlanta Brave in recent memory.
September 30th, 2007 at 11:26 amWell, now I’ll be forced to pay for the mlb package on the television. I got lucky this season to have a friend that had it so we shared. I wonder which of our announcers will be on the “Peach Tree Network” or whatever it will be called. Such a shame.
As for college football, my Sooners were awful yesterday. We had such a promising season until Colorado got the best of us.
So how will you be celebrating the last game on TBS today? I’m going with Stella Artois and maybe lunch from Chilis.
I hope Julio Franco gets at least one at bat today.
September 30th, 2007 at 11:32 amIt will be exciting to see if Chipper can pass Coors for the batting title. There’s no shame in losing to Coors; even the great Tony Gwynn, for all his batting titles, lost to Coors one year. Still, it would be nice to see him pull it out.
September 30th, 2007 at 11:38 amWhat is the “Peach Tree Network”? I’ve read that two or three times now, and I’m still not sure what exactly it is or what it has to do with the 2008 Atlanta Braves.
September 30th, 2007 at 11:42 amAllow me to join the chorus who say “Thank You” to Mac for providing us this fine forum, from which we can complain about the agony caused by the team we love.
Chris Woodward has hit 200/ 253/ 281 this season, with below-average range at every position he’s played. Rafael Belliard, minus the glove. Thank Gawd and Greyhound he’ll be gone- I don’t think even Cox at his most addled can justify keeping him over Renteria/ Escobar/ Lillibridge/ a crate of rotten eggs.
September 30th, 2007 at 11:47 amWTBS is becoming Peachtree TV locally in Atlanta. They have 45 Braves games next year.
I’m not sure what that means for those of us zoned for the Braves by MLB, but not local to the Atlanta. Getting Extra Innings or whatever wouldn’t help, because the Braves will be blacked out. I don’t know if Peachtree will be available to cable providers outside the Atlanta area.
September 30th, 2007 at 11:50 amThis is a sad day. A tough season comes to an end and the Braves lose one of their great distinctions (and for a while there their only distinction) in the national coverage on TBS. I hope they get a win today to finish things out in style. I think today is a day for real Braves fans (seems there are less and less of those every season). Next year looks really bright, but this year looked that way on the last day last year.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:05 pmAn afternoon game on TBS every Sunday next season. With Chip Caray and Tony Gwynn.
Pass.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:15 pmWOW…. The Mets are falling apart.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:25 pm4-0 Marlins in the top of the first, one out, runners on first and second.
Glavine is really melting down.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:26 pmThis is fun.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:26 pm4-0 and Bases Loaded 1 Out.. Willis up.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:27 pmI think I might reconsider my endorsement for bringing Tommy back next year.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:27 pmGlavine’s gone: .1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER (so far), 2 BB, 1 HBP.
Anyone else not want him back?
September 30th, 2007 at 12:29 pmHoly cow. Glavine gets one out. 5 runs. Amazin’.
If Tommy retires, this is an unceremonious end.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:29 pmGlavine hit Dontrelle Willis. 5-0 Marlins. I love it.
Go Marlins and go Phillies!
September 30th, 2007 at 12:31 pmGood old Jorge Sosa.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:37 pmAgents Glavine and Sosa have done a masterful job of getting their revenge.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:38 pmIt’s only fitting since they gave us Chris Woodward.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:40 pmWow, 7-0 Marlins going into the bottom of the first.
I imagine the Mets’ blogs are calling for Tom Glavine to be lynched.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:42 pmAgreed. It took a few years, but Glavine and Sosa were able to execute the plan to perfection.
But honestly, with Dontrelle on the mound, this one is far, far from over.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:45 pmI can’t watch the Mets game. How does this happen:
“C. Beltran singled to catcher”
September 30th, 2007 at 12:48 pmAnd our lineups, for those who care:
Flying home to Georgia and their golf clubs:
Escobar ss
Harris cf
CJones 3b
Francoeur rf
Thorman 1b
BJones lf
Sammons c
Orr 2b
Carlyle p
Able to get their golf clubs from the locker room:
September 30th, 2007 at 12:49 pmAnderson cf
Biggio 2b
Berkman 1b
Lee lf
Pence rf
Loretta ss
Wigginton 3b
Ausmus c
Paulino p
Looking at that lineup, I feel like the only reason Chipper is playing is the batting title.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:50 pmUtley drives in Rollins with a sac fly, and it’s 1-0 Phillies.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:54 pmEnd of the first, Marlins leading 7-1.
Glavine’s line:
0.1 IP
September 30th, 2007 at 12:57 pm5 H
7 R
7 ER
2 BB
0 K
0 HR
Probably a swinging-bunt single, Joey.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:59 pmBobby Cox and all his coaches will be back to be abused again next year. Rejoice!
September 30th, 2007 at 1:01 pmALL Braves’ coaches returning next season….including Roger McDowell.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:03 pmMan, listening to a meaningless baseball game online is better than watching a a Buffalo-Jets (the CBS game here in LA today) game any day.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:03 pmThat’s what they think. Alex and I are going to kidnap someone, and if it isn’t Hampton it may be McDowell.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:03 pmLess meaningful game: Braves or Falcons?
September 30th, 2007 at 1:06 pmWhy does Angel Hernandez have to be behind the plate? He hates us…
(and why Orr at 2nd instead of KJ? It’s not like KJ has had a lot of playing time recently.)
September 30th, 2007 at 1:08 pmFalcons game, definitely.
Chipper could win the batting title. No Falcon is going to win anything this year except, if he’s really lucky, a ticket out of town.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:08 pmChipper walks to stay at .339216.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:10 pmNo hit. You cannot beat Coors Field with walks.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:10 pmThank goodness Chipper’s in the batting race and Frenchy has a mini-streak, or else this lineup could be really horrid.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:10 pmWalks are better than outs. If Chipper Jones has four at-bats and walks in all of them, and Holliday goes 0-4 or something like that, Chipper would win.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:13 pmHolliday actually only “needs” to go 0-1 to drop his average below Chipper’s (to .339172).
And Buddy Carlyle “needs” to disappear right now. Why is he pitching instead of Chuck James or someone else who we’ll see again at some point in the future?
September 30th, 2007 at 1:17 pmTBS sucks for not letting Pete call this game with Skip. Chip is his kid, but he didn’t earn it.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:17 pmRoger McDowell talking to Carlyle: “One of us will be in a Braves uniform after today, and it won’t be you.”
September 30th, 2007 at 1:20 pmhaha. that was a good one.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:21 pmChuck James has some kind of arm problems. David O’Brien was talking about James possibly getting an MRI.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:21 pmWhatever happened to Villareal? He needs to be up right now.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:22 pmJames has upper arm stiffness, whatever that is. Maybe we can get Glavine back real cheap next year
September 30th, 2007 at 1:24 pmOh. Thanks, Dan, I didn’t know that.
San Diego’s jumped on Milwaukee in the first, up 3-0.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:25 pmSo maybe all this one-game playoff talk turns into nothing. NL: AZ, SD, PHI, CHI. I could go for Cubs/Sox series.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:28 pmYeah, it looks now like there will be no tiebreakers anywhere.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:29 pmSkip Caray’s singing debut… hope you covered your ears.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:31 pmMac, thank you for an enjoyable year of reading your forum. And thanks to the readers for a (reasonably) civil year of and conversation.
I read a number of baseball and football blogs and it’s a constant drag to see every downturn in a team’s fortunes bring out the inner-retard in every poster.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:32 pmphils 3-0
September 30th, 2007 at 1:33 pmLoved Skip singing. A perfect way to end the season.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:35 pmman. Mets have left 8 men on in three innings. they’re lousy.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:40 pmMets have stranded eight in three innings to salt the wounds.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:41 pmStill 7-1 after three innings. Willis out. He was walking everyone, including the bases loaded in the third inning….with a six run lead.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:43 pmJust saw the highlight on TBS … that check swing out is hilarious.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:44 pmNew poll, based on the fact that there are only three real players in today’s lineup. Thorman? Orr? Sammons?
September 30th, 2007 at 1:50 pmChipper, Frenchy, Orr (sadly), Escobar, and Brandon. I think.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:52 pm5—Frenchy, B. Jones, Chipper, Escobar, Thorman
September 30th, 2007 at 1:53 pmI say five: Escobar, Chipper Jones, Francouer, Thorman and Brandon Jones.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:54 pmSkip picking Tulowitzki is a little surprising. I would have expected him to go with Braun. I like Tulowtizki over Braun, too, though I’m pretty sure Braun will win.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:56 pmChipper Jones now 0-1.
Congratulations Holliday.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:57 pmChipper, that won’t help…
September 30th, 2007 at 1:57 pmChipper drops to .338552.
September 30th, 2007 at 1:57 pmThose Amazins give up another. 8-1
September 30th, 2007 at 2:04 pmI about fell out of my chair laughing whenever they showed Paul LoDuca checking his swing for that bases loaded 3rd out. Hahaha.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:09 pmAccording to the Met fans, Glavine was and will always be a Brave. They’re also demanding Glavine give back all of his 300 wins gifts.
What a beautiful Sunday.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:13 pmFrancoeur decides to provide SkyMiles for charity based on the home runs he hits- and he hit 10 fewer HR this year than last year. Therefore, we must conclude that Jeff Francoeur hates children. Or something like that.
Matt Holliday walks. He’s still at. 339713.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:23 pmThe Mets’ fans are saying it’s all a big plot and that Tom Glavine is really a Braves and he played with the Mets all these years just to blow this one game on purpose.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:23 pmThe ESPN ticker says Delgado broke his hand on that HBP. Wow.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:26 pm@Dan
Of course they are. Ever been to a Braves home game and sit next to Mets fans? However, they aren’t quite up to par with Red Sox fans. Those guys are the worst.
Everyone LOL@ the Mets!
September 30th, 2007 at 2:27 pmThat is why KJ needs to be at 2nd.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:28 pmTo paraphrase Ring Lardner, “Although Pete Orr is a very poor fielder, he is a very poor hitter.”
September 30th, 2007 at 2:28 pmHolliday still at .33971, he had a walk.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:30 pmChipper needs a hit this inning.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:33 pmIf you ever happen to see this, Skip, as one of those folks who’ve been watching the Braves from afar lo these many years, “Thank You.”
September 30th, 2007 at 2:34 pmIt’s over. No batting title for Chipper this year.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:34 pmDang it. Chipper, I don’t think he has a chance now, does he?
September 30th, 2007 at 2:35 pmAnother out. Well, this is no good.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:35 pmNot unless Holliday has an 0-fer bigger than Chippers.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:35 pmThanks Skip. We’ll miss you, too.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:35 pmWill Chipper get anymore at-bats?
September 30th, 2007 at 2:36 pmDamn straight. Thanks Skip.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:36 pmDan,
He should. If Hurdle finds out that Chipper is out of the game, Holliday might be sat too.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:37 pmHolliday won’t sit unless the Padres win.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:41 pmI doubt that, Sam, seeing that Colorado needs this game to have a shot at the playoffs.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:41 pmOkay. So we know that Holliday is going to stick in there the whole game. Chipper can still get a hit and win the title, even if he gets just one more at-bat. It’s not over yet.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:45 pmPhils score one more: 4-1. It’s gratifying to know that we’re about to enjoy the Mets slipping into that “greatest collapses of all time” conversation from now to eternity.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:47 pmHow fitting: the Braves’ two worst players hitting back-to-back with men in scoring position.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:55 pmAlright, Chris Woodwards last at bat for the Braves! YAY!
September 30th, 2007 at 2:55 pmWhy Woodward here? Why not send a real hitter up and give us a chance to not be shut out in our last game?
September 30th, 2007 at 2:57 pmAnd they both struck out. No surprise.
That story was funny as hell, though.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:58 pmCox just wants to leave one last impression of the 2007 season, and there’s no questioning that it’s an accurate one.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:58 pmOrr then Woodward… possibly the worst sequence of two batters in major league history. Hopefully neither will be back next year.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:59 pmHolliday’s up.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:59 pmAll right! He made an out!
September 30th, 2007 at 3:00 pmMatt Holliday flies out to left and falls to .339172.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:00 pmHolliday now 0-1.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:01 pmThere’s Otis’ catch. Probably the best ballgame I ever saw. I remember it well.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:01 pmAnother piece of trivia about that game- the Braves had the fewest possible batters you can bring up in a nine-inning game, 25. The Braves’ only baserunners were David Justice (2nd inning HR) and Jeff Blauser (4th inning walk and caught stealing).
September 30th, 2007 at 3:03 pmI remember Van Slyke hitting it…but was Drabek the pitcher for the Pirates?
September 30th, 2007 at 3:09 pmNope. Danny Jackson for 7 innings and Bob Patterson in the 8th.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:11 pmWonder what Andruw’s thinking about this send-off for Biggio…
September 30th, 2007 at 3:12 pmYay, it’s Pete!
September 30th, 2007 at 3:14 pmThere’s Pete. Too bad we didn’t get him the whole game.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:14 pmDrabek must’ve been the pitcher in the Bream game?
September 30th, 2007 at 3:15 pmCome on Chipper!!!
September 30th, 2007 at 3:15 pmDang it.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:16 pmDang. That’s all. Well, Chipper needs a hit now, over it’s no title for him.
…
S***, no title.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:16 pmcrap. Congrats, Coors Field. You win another batting title.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:16 pmNOW it’s over.
I’m frankly shocked Chipper Jones fell so flat when he had what he so clearly wanted in his grasp.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:16 pm.337232. Holliday would now have to go 0-5 for Chipper to win the batting title.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:17 pmNot unless Holliday goes 0-4 or 0-5, which is VERY unlikely.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:17 pm@115, yes, he was.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:17 pmDid Chip pass the mic to Pete?
September 30th, 2007 at 3:17 pmNo, Pete was on radio.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:18 pmWell, I suppose I’ll go do something else.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:18 pmSo, how many days have the Phillies been atop of the East this season? Just yesterday and today, right? Braves were there longer, and the Mets were there longest.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:20 pmI dread the offseason, as always.
At least laughing at the Mets will be fun for a little while.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:24 pmLast strike…
September 30th, 2007 at 3:30 pmAnd the Mets go down 8-1.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:31 pmPhilly’s two outs away.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:32 pmAnd there it is. Have a good winter, folks. Enjoyed it.
Congratulations, Phillies.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:33 pmIt’s over. Braves 84-78 to finish the year.
And the METS LOSE!!!!!!!
Marlins: 8
Mets: 1
Phillies winning 6-1 against the Nationals still.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:33 pm“And that’s the end of Braves TBS baseball.”
End of an era…
September 30th, 2007 at 3:34 pmFinal NL East Standings:
Phillies 89-73 –
September 30th, 2007 at 3:35 pmNY Mess 88-74 1 GB
Braves 84-78 5 GB
Nationals 73-89 16 GB
Marlins 71-91 18 GB
For me this is the 2nd best ending to the season other than a Braves World Championship.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:36 pmPhillies win. It’s over.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:37 pmThat’s it. We’ve endured our two down years. It’s only up from here. The Braves win 95-100 games next year if everyone stays relatively healthy.
I agree Ron. Just about the best result that didn’t include the Braves winning the division.
September 30th, 2007 at 3:39 pmWell thats it for sports I prolly wont see that much of the braves since TBS wont be showing them anymore!! dang well at least the METS didnt make it guess thats something to cheer for! Go BRAVES 2008
September 30th, 2007 at 3:42 pmI’ll miss you, TBS. Thanks for giving me a chance to watch the Braves in all four cities I’ve lived in with announcers who love the Braves.
(and HA to the Mets!)
September 30th, 2007 at 3:49 pmYeah… definitely one of the better ways to end a season in which we don’t make it to the playoffs.
At least our season lasted a few minutes longer than the Mets…
September 30th, 2007 at 3:51 pmdid anyone watch that “tribute” kind of thing at the end?
September 30th, 2007 at 3:51 pmIt’s been good Pete, Joe, Don, Skip and Chip. We’ll miss you guys on TBS!!
September 30th, 2007 at 4:00 pmI thought there’d be more to the tribute. Every year they show a montage of highlights while scrolling the credits. The tribute ends and Bloopers come on. Sort of cheap, but I liked the tribute nonetheless.
September 30th, 2007 at 4:05 pm
