Cristhian Martinez is something of a forgotten man in the Braves bullpen. Sometimes it seems like his own manager forgets about him. Don’t get me wrong: Martinez, aptly nicknamed “The Lisp” by Mac a couple years ago, gets plenty of opportunities to pitch. Last season, his 73 2/3 innings in relief easily led the Braves: [...]

Every organization has its strengths and weaknesses. One thing the Braves seem to do well: develop young, cheap bullpen arms. While other organizations pay a premium for setup relievers and closers — for the second straight offseason, the Red Sox have depleted their farm system to obtain a second-division closer — the Braves have been [...]

Merry belated Hanukkah, belated Solstice, and merry upcoming Kwanzaa as well. My Photoshop skills are not what Mac’s were (and in point of fact, I’m using GIMP, not Photoshop), but it seemed fitting to do a holiday-themed photoshop image. This is what I’m sure Fredi wants more than anything this year.

Perhaps a more accurate title of this post would be “Should The Braves Pay Brian McCann?” There’s not much more to be said about Brian McCann that you don’t already know. From 2006- 2011, you could pencil him into the All-Star game and the middle of the Braves’ lineup. You could expect an OPS in [...]

Pardon the interruption… I’m home for the holidays and I hope many of you are as well. I wanted to suggest a casual Braves Journal meetup at Manuel’s Tavern at 5:30 pm on Thursday, December 20. I look like this: If you read this blog and are in Atlanta, odds are that you’ve been to [...]

Ho, ho, ho, my Braves Journal friends, the holiday season is approaching. You’re saying you want something for Christmas? Aren’t you forgetting something? Santa is very sorry, but Santa already gave you your present on July 31. That was the day that Kris Medlen made his first start for the Braves. Medlen made a total [...]

It’s easy to take Freddie Freeman for granted. For instance, when you finish second in the Rookie of the Year voting, you might expect that would generate some excitement — unfortunately, when the person you finished second to is your teammate, then the excitement becomes a little tempered. Or, when you reel off a 20-game [...]

Mikie Minor. My boy. About six months ago, even I — seemingly the last Braves Journal regular with any hope for his future — privately confided in Alex that I thought he needed a change of scenery. Now, much to my delight, he looks like one of the most promising young pitchers in the game. [...]

This is the first Rock ‘n Roll Keltner List, and I wrote the questions to closely model the standard formula. Here’s Mac’s standard preamble to Keltner lists: The Keltner List was developed by Bill James as a device to evaluate a player’s Hall of Fame candidacy. In The Politics of Glory James says that it [...]
